Will’s P.O.V.
Saturday comes around and I decide that I should probably apologize to Jess. I feel slightly guilty for making assumptions about her life, but why does she have to get so angry?
As I pull up to her house, I notice that there is a car in the driveway. I didn’t tell her I was coming because she would have avoided me. I walk up to her house and begin to feel anxious for some reason. I finally gain the courage to ring the doorbell and I am then faced with a man who I assume is her dad.
“Hi, is Jessica here?”
“No, I’m her father, who are you?” He demands.
“I’m Will Montgomery, and I just wanted to talk to Jes-”
“You’re the boy who got her in trouble in chemistry? I expect the best from my daughter, and you are getting in the way of that. I do not appreciate you distracting her from her obligations at school. She is going to college soon, she doesn’t need anything stopping her,” he yells. I instantly feel terrible for what I said to Jess, she must be under a lot of pressure.
“No offense sir, but it really wasn’t that big of a deal.” I reason.
“Look, she doesn’t need to be running around chasing boys,”
“Jessica is great, but I’m not here for that. We’re just friends. Is there anybody else here I can talk to? Your wife? Maybe she’ll understand?” I question.
“My wife has been dead for eight years. Now leave Jessica alone.”
“Can you please just tell her I stopped by?” I plead. And with that he slams the door shut.

I called Jess what seems like a billion times over the rest of the weekend, but she never called back. She ignored me at school and I assumed her dad hadn’t told her I was there. It was probably for the best. I didn’t want to make things worse.
It’s finally Friday and Mr. Harrison decides to trust our class with another lab. I pay extra attention and do my best to make sure there are no other mishaps, for Jess’s sake. She doesn’t talk to me anymore except for standard awkward partner phrases like “You can do this part” and “I’ll grab the paper towel.”
After chemistry I head outside to get ready for our second baseball game of the season. I take my position at second base to warm up and practice fielding before the other team arrives. It’s the same thing as always. Pick up the ball and throw it. After a while of this our team meets in the dugout to get ready to play.
As I look around I can’t help but notice Jess sitting on the front of the metal bleachers. She looks even more bored than I am, waiting with her camera for something to happen.
The game ends after only four innings. We mercied our opponent 16 -2. After we meet in the dugout one last time, I run out to catch Jess before she leaves. “Hey, Jess! Wait up!” I call. Of course she looks back and then keeps walking. “Jessica, please just listen,” I beg as I finally catch up to her.
“What is it I need to hear so desperately?”
“My apology.” She finally stops and turns to me with an expectant look on her face. “I’m sorry about what I said. I know it wasn’t a big deal for me, but I don’t know what it was like for you. I shouldn’t have said that stuff about your perfect life and…” I blabber on while the tiniest smile I’ve ever seen stretches across her face. She cuts me off and starts to lecture me but I don’t hear a word she says. Screw it. I lean in and kiss her…
