Missy stood at the entrance of the Minnelli estate shaking like a leaf. She hated herself for letting Antonio's words get to her. Swallowing her negative thoughts, she rang the doorbell and stepped back.
Antonio answered the door and took in her golden sequined knee length dress and matching heels. Stunning, he thought.
"Dr. Devereaux, it's so nice for you to join us." He helped her up the step. "You look...edible." He whispered. Missy blushed.
"Oh Mélissaire! I was starting to think you weren't coming!" Diane's tiny body grabbed hold of her hands and guided her to the family room where Antonio's cousin, Bethany, Sicilia and Amiri were waiting. Missy looked Sicilia up and down. "How was your week?" Diane started small talk.
"I'm still here. That's what counts." She answered while sitting down. Her hair was blown out and her toned legs glistened in the light. The butler brought everyone a plate of appetizers.
"How did you choose pediatric surgery?" Bethany asked.
"It wasn't my original path..."
"See she's not even qualified!" Sicilia yelled out. Missy started to turn red.
"Shut up girl." Diane yelled.
"If you all would let me finish, I'd explain exactly what happened. Now. When I was in medical school, they prepared us for general surgery. So when I started my residency in Michigan, I was strictly general surgery. My classmate and now surgery partner's wife had a baby and he took FML time away. He made the other team short one member so I volunteered to do both general and pediatric surgery. When he came back, I didn't switch back. And I still do both." She faced Sicilia directly, "And I am the best surgeon in France. With credentials to back it." She sipped her champagne.
"If you're so good, why is my son brain dead?" Sicilia raged. Amiri held her back. Missy didn't flinch.
"I brought him back alive for the sole purpose of giving you the opportunity to do what you will for your child. If you choose to keep him in a vegetative state for the rest of your days, that's your decision. I did what I could. And you will not place blame on me for what really is an accident. You need to accept that and grieve properly. But attacking me because you're heartbroken won't make you feel any better." She turned to Diane and Aries. "I don't know who's idea it was to bring me here for a personal interrogation but I'd appreciate it if you left me alone. Angelo's death was my first death of a patient too. But y'all so stuck on your grief that you can't see that. And fucking with me isn't helping me do my job." She grabbed her clutch and left the room. Aries held Antonio back when he started to go after her.
"Missy! Missy!" Amiri ran after her.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?! I did what I could!" Missy finally exploded. "He opened his eyes. His vitals were fine. I checked. I personally checked. I go out to personally bring his parents to the ICU. The nurse to yells for me. He's flatlining. We fight to bring him back." She's holding on to Amiri. "I fucking tried. And fuck y'all for not seeing that." She raged and stormed out the door.
