As the first golden specks of sunlight lit the glade and the gigantic walls of the unsolved maze opened, the quest for an exit began once again. At a steady pace, Minho began to run his usual route.
With an eye for detail, Minho noticed the slightest changes that happened overnight, not even the narrow opening between two massive walls was left unnoticed. Hiding behind a cascade of thick tangled vines, it could've been easily missed. He pushed the vines aside and went through the opening only to find more dull grey walls staring back at him.
It was when he proceeded to run that low pained groans reached his ears. Intrigued, he quickly turned a corner to investigate but abruptly stopped in his tracks. Ben, a fellow runner, was standing completely still with his back towards Minho.
Minho got closer to him to see what's wrong but before any words were spoken, Ben swung around and buried a knife deep into Minho's shoulder. With a sharp gasp, Minho tumbled backwards but managed to keep himself standing. Evident shock painted Minho's face as he looked at his friend's emotionless one and pulled the knife out.
Not wasting any time, Ben swung again with a different knife. However, this time Minho was ready, he ducked and pushed Ben making him fall forwards. Minho tried to hold him down but a feeble attempt it was. Ben kept thrashing around and was quickly over Minho trying to choke him with his bare hands. Minho's rough fingers clawed at Ben's but Ben's grip was nowhere near loosened.
As black spots started swimming around his vision, Minho kicked Ben and managed to stand up. Ben quickly recovered and threw his knife, aiming for Minho's stomach. A last second slide out of the way saved Minho but not for long, Ben ran and jumped on his back.
Back on the hard ground, they fought and wrestled until Ben was back on top of Minho. The crimson crazy-looking eyes of Ben caused Minho to stop fighting. The greenish foam around Ben's mouth, the sudden aggression, everything made sense now. Minho managed to rip Ben's shirt open.
There it was, already spreading all over his chest and abdomen. Ben was stung by a griever and a revolting sight it was. The realization hit Minho harder than any of Ben's punches. He froze. Ben took the opportunity and pushed his thumbs hard into Minho's eyes. As Minho's loud screams filled the air, Ben was lifted off of him.
It took Minho a good minute to regain his sight but when he did, he saw a huge griever pinning Ben down. Quickly, he got hold of one of Ben's daggers and threw it hitting the griever's head. Causing enough distraction, Minho was able to save his friend and drag him away only for Ben to attack Minho again. As Ben was about to land a fatal blow, he was lifted off of Minho but this time, it wasn't the griever.
