Chapter twelve

I checked the time on my phone after I stopped crying. It was still a bit early, and I figured everyone else was still asleep, so I decided to stay in bed for a bit.

An image of Lily came to my mind but I shoved it away. My mind wandered back to Felix. And that kiss. I groaned and shifted in bed. Why did he kiss me at that time specifically? We were supposed to find Lily, not start a whole new make out session. That guy was surely the most confusing person I’ve ever met.

That circus though…Something about it just wouldn’t stop bugging me. The performers, the man and the tray, the audience. What exactly were they? The image of the weird moving marks on their skin wouldn’t get out of my head. And their large freaky eyes. I shivered, and hoped that I wouldn’t have to see one of them again.

Then I thought back to the previous night. At the pier with Aaron, the words he said. The way he suspected Felix. I didn’t understand either of them. Aaron was always mean to me before just a few days ago, and Felix…I barely even knew him, now that I thought about it.

I didn’t know his favorite color, his favorite food. Or what he liked to do during his free time. What about his family? He never spoke about his life outside our dreams. I didn’t know how it worked for him, but I doubt that he had to write on a piece of paper before he went to bed every night.

At some point, I got bored of laying in bed and doing nothing. I was tired of thinking, and over thinking. I got up, refreshed in the bathroom, then went downstairs to get something to eat.

Mom was behind one of the counters, baking, as usual. She had the file, where she kept all her recipes in, open in front of her. I watched as she flipped through the pages and added a few more things to the bowl in front of her.

“Morning,” I said as I walked into the kitchen.

She turned around and gave me a smile, “Good morning. Any weird dreams lately?”

Nope. Unless you count watching your friend die and not knowing if it really happened. Or a circus with weird people, and don’t forget that make out session.

“No,” I said.

“I remember you used to tell me all your dreams when you were a kid, some of them actually worried me.” She laughed.

I forced a smile and sat on one of the stools. “What’s for breakfast?”

“I thought we should go out together and get some at one of the cafes. We haven’t spent much time together as a family since we got here. I’ll just pop those in the oven and we can leave.”  She said.

I mumbled an okay, and that I would go upstairs to change. I passed Jade’s room on my way to my own. The door was open and I saw her walking around the room as she looked for go knows what.

“Hey Jade, mom wants us to go out for breakfast, you should probably cover that up.” I said, gesturing at her pierced ears.

“I already have plans.”

“Well then cancel them.”
