Amazon | Sixteen

Bastian stared at his brother, his jaw was clenched as he watched the man smile at Anthea and act as if there was nothing wrong. Bastian looked over at Rhea and Achilios, Achilios stared curiously up at Rhea who held her dagger tightly and seemed murderous. Bastian turned his gaze to his mother; she was sobbing in relief and clinging to his father. His father's face left nothing, the man showed no emotion.

Taking a deep breath, Bastian broke his bread and bit into it. His family home was quiet as they all sat down to eat, Bastian refused to look up. Rhea and Achilios ate quickly before hurrying from the room after excusing themselves. Rhea stood in the courtyard and took deep breaths, burying her head in her hands and shaking it. Bastian's older brother Deacon hated her; she could see it in his eyes whenever he looked at her.

She did not trust him either; in fact if she was terrified of any person, she would be afraid of him. He had a look in his eyes that seemed that he would attempt to destroy anyone in his way. Perhaps she reminded him of the Amazons that had been her people who had slaughtered his men. All she knew was that Deacon did not particularly like her, she was not surprised.

"Rhea," she turned her head to face Bastian, "How are you?"

"Fine," she cleared her throat and looked at him suspiciously, "What is the problem Bastian?"

"Nothing," Bastian sighed and looked around the courtyard.

"Really," Rhea put her hands on her hips and looked at him incredulously, "Are you sure about that?"

"No," Bastian sighed and sat down on one of the benches, "Deacon has been looking at you like he is ready to destroy you."

"I have noticed," she replied quite coolly and Bastian winced. "I do not trust him, I fear he only thinks of me as an Amazon and he will kill me. I am what I am and I cannot change that, but I can try to accept your customs and follow them," Rhea took a deep breath, "But I will not be killed because your brother thinks me unworthy and has a hatred for my people."

"You won't be killed!" Bastian argued as he stared at Rhea, "I will not let him, you may be one of the Amazons but he would bring my father shame if he thought about attacking you."

"Women are seen as slaves here Bastian," Rhea glared at the man before her, "It would be better if Achilios and I left the city. I cannot condone what you believe in, I hate it." She sighed and turned away from him, "I feel so restricted; I cannot be the woman I want to be. I am bound by your rules and I do not wish it to be like this."

"Rhea," Bastian sighed as he looked up at her, "I will take you to find the Amazons, just give me a few days."

"I will choose to trust you Bastian," she decided, "Do not let me down or I will destroy you."

Bastian believed Rhea of course, she would harm him; Rhea's threats would not be taken lightly. He looked at her as she headed over to Achilios, he frowned for a minute. How would the orphan boy be treated? Bastian suddenly felt uncomfortable, did she not realise that the boy would be hated? Bastian suddenly had a sick feeling in his gut.

He felt something as a thought snuck into his head, did Rhea plan it? He did not want to believe badly in the woman yet Rhea was an Amazon, she was a woman who had been raised to hate men. He would not be surprised if she had planned it, if her people had sent her out to collect the boy. Bastian felt ill, was Rhea a woman he could not trust?
