Tara laid in the sand, trying to catch her breath.  What was I even doing?  She wondered, closing her eyes and shutting the world out for a moment.  She was on a date with Ashton, possibly one of the kindest men she'd ever met, yet she found herself drawn to Michael, this charismatic, goofy...jerk.  As she opened her eyes, Michael passed where she lie, head up and not saying a word.  She couldn't tell if he was pissed off or just that good at pretending like nothing ever happened.

Ashton took a seat next to her, offering the blanket that he must have taken a trip to the car for.

"You didn't have to do that," she begins, but he drapes himself with it and brings her close so it can cover the both of them.  Everyone else had dry clothes to change into, and all they had was each other.

"You're too perfect", Tara sighs, resting her head on Ashton's shoulder.  He kisses her forehead and they lie back in the sand, cuddling and just comfortable enough to start to drift off to sleep.  Within an hour, the bonfire was nearly extinguished and the cooler was full of empty beer bottles.  The only one awake was Michael, and that's because his mind was racing.  He sat on one of the logs, strumming his guitar mindlessly as he watched his friend and the girl of his dreams sleep peacefully in each others arms.

Tell me where you're hiding your voodoo doll 'cause I can't control myself
I don't wanna stay, wanna run away but I'm trapped under your spell
And it hurts in my head and my heart in my chest
And I'm having trouble catching my breath

Tara woke to the sound of Michael's voice, mumbling and unsure of the lyrics he made up on the spot.  He groaned and started again, and again.  When he noticed her begin to stir, he didn't stop, he just sang to her, bitter and confused.  Her head was cocked toward him, watching every move of his fingers on the guitar strings, and Ashton's chest rose and fell with every deep breath he took next to her.  She debated getting up, but she knew she couldn't get close to Michael the way she did in the water.  She didn't understand what was wrong with her.

Michael nodded, pointing toward the horizon where the sun began to surface.  It was beautiful, and she couldn't recall the last time she stayed out the entire night.  Her attention turned back to Michael whose eyes never left her.
