Of course I'm just dreaming. I always am. There's no way I'll be able to fly all the way home. Not now. It's too soon for me to take off work and I really don't have the money. So with a sigh, I erased my plan from the whiteboard on my fridge.
At the same moment came a knock at the door. Oh my gosh, can't people tell that I don't like people?
I went to open the door, and just as I had predicted-
"Meg." I greeted her with the best smile I could force.
"Is it a bad time?" She asked whilst coming inside.
"Nah. I guess not."
Manners maybe? I mean, I was raised in a trailer park and I know that you don't just walk into peoples homes without being invited. This girl was raised in Los freaking Angeles and she thinks she owns the place. Ugh. Entitlement sickens me.
I'm really just in a bad mood. This has nothing to do with my unexpected guest. Who is here. In my apartment. Again.
"I haven't been able to get a hold of you. Are you doing alright?" She asks with a sort of sympathy in her voice that almost makes me want to be honest.
"Yeah," I lie anyway. "Of course I'm alright. Why wouldn't I be?" I laugh a little.
She raises a brow.
"If you say so," she says.
A long pause...
"Look, Shawn Hunter, I really think you should take a breather. You seem so stressed."
"Stressed? Pfftt. Don't you think I would know if I were stressed?"
"Shawn... honey-" she starts
"I know."
"Then come with me. We'll go for a walk and you can calm down a little bit. Maybe tell me what's wrong?"
It's not a bad suggestion. I accept her offer and pull my shoes on.
"I don't have to tell you anything. I'm okay, really. I'm just tired, working and all. You know how it can be." I walk with her out the door.
"I understand." Does she? "I'm really trying to be your friend!"
"I don't need you to be my friend, Meghan!" I snap at her.
"Yeesh." She mutters and then remains silent.
After quite some time. Meg places her fingers with mine. I let it happen, and we walk hand in hand, speechless, until we arrive back at the entrance to my appartment building.
"Thanks" she says as she releases my hand.
I nod. "Thank you." I reply.
"Do you feel better now?" She asks with a hint of enthusiasm and a gleam in her eye that reminds me of Cory.
I nod again. "Yeah. I'm okay." I answer and then I turn to make my way back upstairs.
As I'm climbing the stairs back to my floor, my phone begins to ring. The caller ID shows up as "Jack"
I answer
"Hey"
"Shawn, Hi!" My older brother exclaims from the other side of the line. "How is everything going?"
"Alright, I suppose. What about there? Is everybody doing okay?"
"Yeah. Everybody's good. We're all here at The Matthew's appartment and wondered if you could spare a moment to facetime." There was a question hidden in there.
"Jack I really don't--" I read don't want to talk to everyone. I think it would make not being there even harder.
"No seriously just for a minute. Literally 60 seconds" I don't think I have much of a choice.
"I guess so." I reluctantly agreed as I sat on the stairs and switched over to facetime.
I'm bombarded with Hi's and Hello's as soon as I see everybody on the screen.
Jack, Eric, Rachel, Topanga, Cory, and Angela are all there. And they're all smiling. But I can't bring myself to smile back.
"Hey guys." I return the greeting in the best possible tone I can muster up.
"Shawnie!" Cory comes right up to the camera and waves at me. "It's good to see you, buddy. How ya been??" He asks.
"I've been alright, Cor, what about you?"
"I miss you a lot, really!"
"I miss you too."
Angela steps over, "Excuse me" she demands as she picks up the phone. "Hey there baby. You look so rough."
"Gee, thanks." I reply with a sarcastic grin.
"You good?" She asks.
"I'm great."
"You sure?"
"Positive." I lie right to her.
"SHAwn!" Cory takes the phone from her. "Guess what??"
"What?"
He rolls his eyes at me. "You have to GUESS!!"
"Oh Jeez, Cory, I don't know. Feeny retired?"
Cory's smile drops and he blinks at me. "Really, Shawn? You really think that's ever gonna happen... really?"
"I give up just tell me."
His smile returns and he jumps in a little circle that almost makes me dizzy to watch on the screen.
"Topanga's pregnant!!" He squeals.
At that moment Topanga joins him with a big smile across her face as well.
"Really?" I ask. But I realize I should be more enthusiastic with how happy they seem. "Really??!" I try again. But this time I put a smile on.
"Really!" Topanga says as she wraps her arms around Cory's waist and lays her head on his shoulder. "We just found out this morning."
"I'm gonna be a dad!" Cory adds
"That's great you guys. Congratulations. I'm happy for you, really. But I've got to get going."
"That's okay, Shawnie." Cory says. "We just really wanted you to know."
"Thanks for telling me."
"Youre welcome." And then he gets serious. " I need you to stop forgetting about us, okay? We miss you a lot and it would be nice if you would answer our calls and messages more often.. please?"
"I'll try"
"Promise?" He pleads.
"I promise."
"Good! I'll see you soon okay??"
"Okay." I agree and hang up the call before any further conversation can start.
As I continue up the stairs, I wish, so much, that I could have been there when Cory got everyone together to tell the news, and to give him and Topanga a hug, to genuinely congratulate them. But instead I'm here. Sulking in my loneliness and not even feeling much for my people back home.
