Mary, Veronica, Chrissie and myself had been shopping in the scenic downtown shopping district all afternoon while the boys were in the studio rehearsing and recording. It was so very quaint and picturesque nestled there at the base of the Alps. After four hours of heavy shopping and about 50,000 pounds worth of damage between the four of us we had decided it was time for a hot beverage and a Swiss pastry from one of the little bakeries that lined the street. After walking around in the cold from boutique to boutique we had decided it was time for a warm-up anyway.
“Hmm…Is that made with nonfat milk?” I asked.
“It can be, ma’am, yes.” The barista answered me.
“Hmm…Is it sugar-free syrup?” I continued.
“We have a sugar-free Hazlenut syrup, yes.”
“Hmm…so the whipped topping, is that made with low-fat…” Mary cut me off.
“Oh my god! She’ll have the large caramel macchiato with extra whip and a caramel drizzle!”
“No! I certainly will not! I’ll have a tall café Americano please and a bowl of fruit.” I corrected the order quickly. Mary rolled her eyes at me as she ordered her caramel macchiato and delicious looking bear claw. Veronica and Chrissie placed their orders while Mary and I wrestled our bags and went to get the four of us a table. Fortunately, we found a vacant table toward the back of the dining area near the fire. It was so very cozy and we were tired. The tender amber flames could have put me to sleep in no time. Mary and I had a seat and piled our multitude of bags in the corner. I leaned my head over against her shoulder and she leaned her head against mine.
“I know. I’m exhausted too.” She said. Chrissie and Veronica were shortly behind us. They piled their bags on top of ours. It was absurdly ridiculous the stack we had accumulated.
“Are you two tired? We’ve barely gotten started!” Chrissie insisted, pulling her chair out from the table and sitting down rather excitedly. She sighed and put her hands on the table. “Girls, there’s something I’d like to tell you all that I haven’t yet.” Chrissie said happily as she worked her coat off and hung it to the back of the chair.
“Oh yeah?” Mary asked perking up. Veronica and I gave her our attention. There was a smile plastered across her face.
“Brian and I are trying to have a baby!” She beamed all over.
“Oh my god! Chrissie!” Mary reached across the table, putting her hands. Veronica reached over to hug her.
“Aww, that’s really great, sweetie. I’m happy for ya’.” I assured her, digging a cigarette out of my pack and lighting it. I offered one to Mary as well.
“I took four tests this morning. They were all negative.” Chrissie confessed to us with a rather disappointed expression.
“Well, that’s okay.” Veronica assured her.
“No, it certainly is not! I can’t believe I had four negative tests! Two months, seven tests…all negative.” Chrissie sighed and shook her head. We could all see the pain in her eyes. The pain of just how desperately she wanted a baby. “It’s gonna’ be alright though. I told Brian I’d be ovulatin’ again in a week and we could try then.” She explained.
“Well…what do you mean try then? When was the last time you had sex?” Mary asked. Naturally, a waitress just had to show up with our orders at that exact time. Mary rolled her eyes. It wasn’t the first time wait staff somewhere had heard her say something that was probably better left within the confines of just us girls.
