Rain was already pouring when Ryan got back home. There was going to be a thunderstorm. A fucking thunderstorm - that one unreasonable thing that could terrify him to an insane extent.
He slammed the door shut and nearly ran through the house, closed all the doors and put blinds over his windows. He was already freaking out and the storm hasn't even started yet. Until then.
A loud bang and a lightning bolt. Ryan let out a tiny scream and started shaking. He sat on the floor, trembling in fear. Another bang. Another lightning. And he was breaking down.
He heard his phone ringing. He picked up with shivering fingers and tried to steady himself a little bit. And failed to do so, as the wind started blowing loudly.
  - H-Hello? - he said, not even looking at who was calling. His voice was shaky and unnaturally high pitched. On the other hand, the person on the other side of the phone had a deep, calming voice. It was his boyfriend, Brendon.
  - Ry? Is everything okay? - Brendon said in concern. He knew about the fear, since on their third date it was storming and Ryan freaked out.
  - Y-yeah, w-why wouldn't it b-be? - Ryan tried to sound confident and failed to do so miserably.
  - You're at home, right? - Brendon said. Ryan let out an airy "Yeah".
  - I'll be there in five minutes - his boyfriend said reassuringly. They said their goodbyes and hung up.
Bang. Lightning. Another unintentional scream left Ryan's mouth.
There was a knock on his door. Ryan slowly stood up and wiped away his tears in order to steady himself a little bit. He walked over to the door and unlocked it with his shaking hands. He slowly opened the door and looked up at the person that was knocking - Brendon.
Brendon was really good at reading expressions on Ryan's face. This one said only one thing - "terror". He was pale, trembling and had bloodshot eyes from crying.
As soon as Brendon looked at him, he pulled him into a tight hug.
  - I'm going to protect you, okay? - he whispered. Ryan nodded. His boyfriend closed the door and slowly walked to the couch, wrapping his arm around Ryan's waist. They sat down, when there was one more thunder. Ryan jolted up and gasped, trying not to scream this time.
  - Hey, shh, it's okay... - Brendon said, wrapping an arm around him. - It's okay, sweetie - he said, stroking Ryan's hair. He calmed down a bit.
Another thunder. Ryan let out a squeal of terror and burried his face in Brendon's shoulder.
  - It's okay, don't be scared - he said, stroking Ryan's hair gently. - Nothing can hurt you here, I'm here with you... - he said quietly.
It broke Brendon's heart to see him like that. The person he loved, in this state. He just hoped for the storm to go away as soon as possible. He was slowly stroking Ryan's hair, humming a calming melody.
After some time, Ryan calmed down. He was slowly drifting to sleep, right there, in Brendon's arms, still nuzzling into his shoulder. Brendon smiled as he looked at the person he loved more than anything, asleep in his embrace, looking like a five year old. Adorable. His beautiful, amazing boyfriend.
Brendon kissed the top of Ryan's head, slowly held him up, trying not to shake him awake, and carried him to the bedroom. He laid him down on the bed and sat next to him.
  - I love you. Not even a storm can stop that - Brendon said, slowly drifting to sleep himself.
