In 1988, Noam Chomsky coauthored a book with Edward S. Herman, titled "Manufacturing Consent." It blasted apart the notion that media acts as a check on political power. The media informs as well as serves the public, so that we can better engage in the political process.
In fact, media manufactures our consent. They inform us of what those in power need them to tell us, in order for us to fall in line. Democracy is staged, with the assistance of the media that work as propaganda machines.
The media operates through 5 filters, the first having to do with ownership. Mass media firms are large corporations, often being part of even bigger conglomerates. Their end game is profit. Therefore, it's in their best interest to push for whatever guarantees that profit.
Critical journalism takes second place to the needs and interests of the corporation. This filter exposes the true role of advertising, as media costs a lot more than consumers will ever pay. The question rises, who fills the gap? Though, the answer is evidently advertisers. It isn't that the media are selling you a product, they are also selling advertisers a product, which is you.
How is it that the establishment manages the media? This is the third filter. Journalism can not be a check on power, as the very system encourages complicity. Governments, corporations, and large institutions know how to play the media game. They are fully aware how to influence the news narrative. They feed media scoops, official accounts, interviews with the alleged experts. They make themselves crucial to the process of journalism.
When the media, journalists, whistleblowers, and sources stray from the consensus, they receive what is known as flack.
Flack is the fourth filter. When the story is inconvenient for the powers that be, the effects of this filter are crystal clear, discrediting the sources, degrading stories, and diverting the conversation.
In order to manufacture consent, it requires an enemy, otherwise referred to as a target. That common enemy is the fifth filter. Communism, terrorists, immigrants are the alleged common enemy. A boogieman to fear helps corral the public opinion.
