After Francesca went to put Everly to bed, just Sarah and Sirius remained in the kitchen with Mittens, who insisted on snuggling up with the latter. Sarah pulled up a chair at the table and motioned for Sirius to sit down as well.

"So," Sarah said, crossing her arms as Sirius took a seat, "it's true."

Sirius grinned mischievously. "Told you so."

"Yeah, yeah," she shrugged, waving him off. She seemed to think for a moment, before speaking again. "How did you two meet?"

Sirius stood behind his classmates in line, waiting for his name to be called. After speaking with James, a boy he met on the train, he no longer wanted to be placed in Slytherin. He knew he was never quite like his family to begin with, and being sorted into Slytherin was just one more box they wanted to force him into.

As a Black, he was taught to uphold the blood purity tradition of the Sacred Twenty Five. He was predestined to keep the "pure" magic in the family. But as Sirius, the person he really was, he didn't want to be like the ones he shared a last name with. He was brave. Daring. Bold. Just as James had described.

"Black, Sirius."

At the mention of his name, he strode over to the stool positioned at the back of the room. The hall grew silent as the leather hat was placed onto his head. Under his breath, Sirius repeated a simple phrase to himself, over and over again, burning in his mind.

"Not Slytherin, not Slytherin."

"Not Slytherin, hm?" The hat responded with a curious tone in its voice. "Don't want to be like your family, either. Well, you've got plenty of courage, yes. You're brave at heart. I know exactly where to put you... better be GRYFFINDOR!"

Sirius leapt from the stool and made his way over to the Gryffindor table, which was not hesitant in cheering boisterously for him. He found a seat next to a rather tall boy, who nodded in approval. Sirius chatted among his peers, cheering occasionally when another student joined their house. That was, until a girl's name was called.

"Knight, Francesca."

Sirius glanced up and watched as she made her way to the stool. He stared intently as she plopped down on the chair and studied her face. He noticed how her warm brown eyes sparkled as the candlelight hit them. How her chocolate brown hair curled at the ends and bounced as the hat was placed upon her head. How she was absolutely, painstakingly beautiful.

"GRYFFINDOR!"

"I see," said Sarah, smiling slightly. "I never put much thought into Hogwarts, you know, with my brother and all, he's the star of the family. I never really wanted anything to do with it, but I remember vaguely hearing about the houses. That's the brave one, right?"
