"Good friends are like stars. You don't always see them, but you always know they're there."
Growing up, there was always a magical cure for everything.
Scraped knee? Bruise? Splinter?
"Don't worry," her mother would say, "I've got you covered."
Sarah wasn't exactly fond of the idea of Sirius coming to live at the bakery, not after his unfortunate crash into the lamppost last week. She wouldn't admit it, but she was pretty sure that seeing the man all bloodied and bruised traumatized her. Not to mention, he had completely overstepped Francesca's boundaries by mentioning her (very dead) parents, which he shouldn't have even known about in the first place. He was up to something, Sarah just knew it.
It was obvious that Francesca had taken a bit of a liking to him, so she kept her skepticism to herself, not wanting to hurt her best friend's feelings. She couldn't blame her, though. He was just Francesca's type: dark hair and tall, complete with the bad-boy persona she adored.
A couple of days had gone by since Francesca welcomed the man into her bakery. As Sarah whipped up another batch of jelly tarts, she couldn't help but eavesdrop on the conversation Sirius was having at the front desk.
"Listen, Peter, I don't know if you've noticed, but Remus and I aren't on the closest of terms right now. I'd rather him not find me, after what happened."
Sarah furrowed her eyebrows as she listened intently to Sirius' words. Oh, so he was hiding from someone, she thought. It should have been obvious from the moment he bribed Francesca with the whole "no home, no wand, no motorcycle" spiel. It would only be a matter of time before this 'Remus' person came waltzing into their bakery, threatening to hurt them all. She should have known this man wasn't who he claimed to be.
"If Remus wants to think that he can spy for Voldemort and that all of the years we spent as friends mean nothing to him, so be it. He can follow whoever he pleases, but he can't put James in danger. I wasn't about to let him get away with it."
At the mention of Voldemort, Sarah's blood ran cold. She didn't have to be a witch to know of the uprising in the streets, the dark magic that sent muggle-borns into hiding and had half-bloods shunned amongst the community. Gilderoy had told her all about it, how things were changing for him at Hogwarts.
Okay, she thought, so maybe Sirius wasn't a part of Voldemort's followers, but he was involved with people who were. Great. Now how was she going to break the news to Francesca?
Her thoughts were interrupted by a nasally voice. "Why are you here, then?"
"Chessie's here."
"Francesca? But I thought she disappeared!"
Wait, Sarah thought, disappeared? She listened intently as the conversation went on.
"That's their flat. She's living with her little sister, too. I haven't really had the chance to see her, but I'm assuming she takes up one of the rooms upstairs."
