( KING POV )

I stared out of the window as the courtyard filled with the pampered daughters from all corners of the kingdom, all in different levels of finery and all here for one thing. The chance at being my future wife, and queen. I glared at the various visitors as the sound of door opening behind me reached my ears, I didn't turn around more interested in surveying the people below than who was entering the library. "Have you seen one you like yet my darling?" I glanced to my side at the sickly sweet voice, finding my mother at my side now looking into the courtyard as I had been. My mother was my opposite in almost every way, in appearance that was. She had golden hair falling in a flat sheet to sit in between her shoulders, the strands fine and silky almost like spiders silk. Her pale skin much like porcelain or china, from the lack of sun shine it had seen in her years. And of course her eyes were clear and bright, the colour of the clear oceans or sapphires. My own hair was thicker and though silky it was slightly wavy, the colour of the blackest coal sitting around shoulder length. My own skin slightly tanned and healthy in appearance, from years of training under the sun and riding in the heat. My own eyes a striking silver, almost metallic in appearance much like my fathers before me. Narrowing my gaze I studied my mother for a moment, finding her looking down at the gathering women with boredom in her eyes I returned my gaze below, scoffing gently as I replied my tone tight. "Do not play mother, you know I would hold no desire for any of those retched creatures. I desire a true beauty, one worthy of the crown that she will wear at my side" I heard her hum gently as we remained silent for a time, when a sight caught my eye. New horses were being taken into the stables, one stallion in particular catching my gaze. Turning on my heel I moved to leave stopping at my mothers voice, this time her voice sounding stern a silent warning that was ill disguised. "You will choose a bride, I will have you avoid this no longer."

Standing still for a moment I considered her words before moving to leave once more, I knew she was right. I had been crowned for over a year and mother was growing impatient, but I refused every woman that approached me. I would take no wife who sought nothing but power or wealth, and I would have no queen with a heart of ice. My people deserved better and I would have no harpy for a wife, or mother to my future children. Moving quickly I headed to the stables taking the back corridors, ignoring the servants socked expressions as they passed. I was not ready to deal with the gushing woman just yet, nor their false words of flattery. I would go to the stables and personally oversee the new horses, I took pride in all the heads in my stables and I would not take any less than the best. Hearing the shuffling of hooves more clearly I turned out into the open path leading towards the stables hearing a commotion, if the hands were not able to handle the steeds then they would be quickly dismissed. But turning into the open archway I stilled completely seeing the sight before me, several new horses were being looked over by my captain. Clearly these horses were meant for heavy work, such as pulling carriages or to be war steeds. All of which looked well fed and groomed well, impressive as many of the horses brought to be inspected were either under fed or poorly groomed by their ill prepared breeders. So where had these horses been brought from? Moving closer being sure not to draw attention just yet I caught sight of an older man rubbing down the neck of the gelding being inspected. He seemed to handle the horse well and showed clear care for the animal as he touched it, calling for someone behind him when my captain called for a stallion. I watched the larger bay animal come in only to feel my entire being still, my eyes finding and stilling on its handler as my mind supplied me with one word. Beautiful.

( Y/N POV )

Brushing my hands down my horses flank one more time I tried to keep calm, I came to help deliver and show the horses but I hadn't expected it to be during a ball. By the looks of the people they were all rich or upper class, the woman all dressed in their fine gowns. Any who caught sight of me either looked down their nose or simply turned away in disgust, I frowned at that. I had every right to be here too, even if I wasn't in a fancy gown for some silly ball in the castle. Turning my head when Jacob called me I turned my attention back to work, I had let my mind wander when the captain of the guard started to talk with him. He wasn't annoyed at me, he had known me since I was little and if anything he seemed amused at my day dreaming by his tone. " Y/N! Bring in a stallion, steady and calm one I think" Shaking my head at him I turned to untie the bay stallion closest to me, I had no doubt he wanted a horse for a guard. The bay was calm and he didn't startle easy, and responded well to most everyone. Smiling as a muzzle nudged my shoulder I couldn't help the giggled that slipped out as I reached back to rub the horses nose gently, I'd miss this one if they chose him. I helped break in almost all the horses and I knew them well, this stallion being one of them. Coming to stand at Jacob's side I smiled but kept my eyes down, Jacob had been clear on how I was to behave if I joined him today. He expected me to be quiet unless spoken to while he negotiated with the staff, so unless I was directly asked something I intended to be silent. So when Jacob took the lead rope I took that as my dismissal and bowed my head before moving away, letting a breath of relief out as soon as I was back in the courtyard. I had no desire to be here any longer than necessary, I had things to do that didn't including being glared at by rich women.
