-----3 MONTHS EARLIER-----

"Kai! If you don't get up in the next five minutes, you'll be late for school!"

"Is that really such a problem?" He mumbled into his pillow. He knew that if he didn't get up now, he'd miss the bus and then his parents would have to take him to school, thus making them get in trouble at work for being late. So, deciding to be the better man, he got up so his parents wouldn't get in trouble on the first day at their new jobs. He sat up and, very loudly, stretched.

"Guess you're up then. Waffles are waiting downstairs." His brother said, leaning against the doorframe to his bedroom.

"Thanks, I'll be down in a second." He waved off his brother and continued to get ready for school, beginning with his clothes. He scratched his head as he walked over to his closet, grabbing a blue and white plaid button-down with a tan-brown sweater over it with a pair of jeans and red Vans.

He walked into the bathroom downstairs and brushed his curly hair as much as possible, though it didn't do much, and ran into the kitchen, grabbing his plate of waffles and scarfing them down as fast as humanly possible.

"I'm off!" He yelled while running to the door, backpack in hand.

"Okay! Have a good day! Love you!" His mom yelled after him. He waved and shut the door, checking his phone for the time. When he saw that it was 6:58, he started running since his bus would get there at about 7:05, and he still had a mile to go.

As he ran, he passed by some unexpecting bypassers, most of which were ladies out for jogs or people walking their dogs. He marveled at how all these people could get up at this time of day for physical torture or, more commonly known as exercise. He was halfway there and he was already struggling to breath due to the intense burning in his ribs.

After making a little bit more, he slowed to a jog and checked the time again to see that it was now 7:01. He had 4 minutes to walk, jog, run, or sprint approximately one-fourth of a mile. He had time, so he slowed to a walk and took deep breaths, finally arriving at the bus stop just as the bus had arrived.

The bus driver opened the doors and everyone climbed on silently. He opted to sit behind the bus driver, since that was probably the safest place on the bus. He put in his earbuds, propped his feet up on the seat, and put on his favorite song. Zombie covered by Missio blared in his ears all the way to the one story high school with small portables outside for some classes.

He waited until everyone got off and then made his way for the door only to be stopped by the bus driver.

"Welcome to Montridge High." Kai nodded and said a quick thank you before climbing down the steep stairs of the yellow bus and onto the grounds of his new high school.
