The sights and sounds were typical of any other neighborhood that you wouldn't want to venture into after dark.
The two men spilled out into the muggy July evening. Falling into step, and always in tune, with eachother .Niether spoke. Trey let his eyes scan his surroundings, scoping out ....a homeless man strumming a beat up guitar for spare change, a group of sketchy looking men he recognized them as 'trouble ', an elderly lady hugging her purse tightly against her ample breast , a couple of young black girls pushing baby strollers . Although it was very stereotypical, it was what it was
A torn lip on the skirts of the most dangerous part of Newport News Virginia. Mostly people who had given up on better or those who fed on them. Spider and Trey were a little bit of both.
Mid stride Trey lit another cigarette.
"You ok?" Spider gulped and swollwed hard as if the words made him gag. It was odvious that empathy was a hard emotion for him to claim.
"Hell yea...why you asking?"
"I dunno. Just...you acting all jumpy and shit."
"Like hell!" he snapped. The fact that Spider could read him so well was enough to piss him off. Add that to the sparks of unfounded fear brewing inside of him and Trey was ignited into full defense mode. He abruptly stopped walking. Something's were better left unsaid.A kiss of breeze stirred up the air around them, slapping Spider's funk in his direction. It settled around him like an unwelcome embrace.
Spider followed suit of coming to a stand still.
"Okay. Now I know something's up." Trey was slow to respond searching his vocabulary for the right limb to climb out onto. "Don't be going all psychiatrist on me ."
The stench of unwashed flesh ,and just plain Jefferson Avenues ghetto factor, was making his insides quiver. He was afraid that if he opened his mouth to speak that vomit might pour out instead of words. So he didn't talk.
"OK, fine. Whatever."This was supposed to be the hit that was going to put some decent money into their pockets. Enough funds to cushion them for a good minute.
Trey couldn't very well say that they shouldn't go through with it.
He knew that a broke man was a loose cannon. It wouldnt take much for Spider to blow himself up.
The voice inside of Treys head added,'and you are going to get struck by the cannon ball right along with him.'
Still he kept quiet....that was where he made his mistake.
