Chapter Two

Two ships engage in a battle in space, relentlessly shooting at one another. Finally, the black ship hits the green ship, taking out the green ship's engine. It starts to fall. The pilot, an alien, grabbed hold of the bar on the ship as it fell through space, headed towards one of the planets the alien had sworn to protect. He braced himself as the ship came closer and closer to hitting the ground.

Hal practiced his daily routine, walking through one of the forests of Coast City. He never saw anyone here, which made it peaceful for him as well as the birds and other wildlife that would greet him here. He continued his stroll through the woods, thinking about his upcoming date. Sure, he had been on some dates before, but this one felt... different. Hal stopped and watched as the trees swayed a bit. Then he heard something. He saw animals running out from their bush, away from the sound. Hal looked up and saw something big about to hit the ground. He started to run away from in, but tripped on a root and fell over. Hal looked up to see that it was a ship falling.

The ship hit the ground, causing an immediate explosion and fire right next to Hal. Hal scrambled out of the way, looking at the destruction. To his horror, the crash landing reminded him of the worst day of his life: the day his father died. A man crawled out of the ship, coughing. He was, wait that had to be Hal's imagination. He was seeing things. He was... pink. He was bald and his skin was pink. He was wearing a ridiculous glowing green suit.

"My... name," the alien coughed. "Is Abin... Sur, protector of... Sector 2814."

Hal rushed over to the dying man's side, "Stay with me, alien dude. Uh, my name is Hal Jordan, protector of ship number 4182 at Ferris Aircraft."

"Hal... Jordan," Abin Sur managed. "My ring senses a great ability to overcome fear inside of you."

"Uh, thanks," Hal said, trying first to apply pressure to a wound, but seeing as there were too many of them, he grabbed his phone and dialed 911.

"I sense great loss in your life. You have much fear, but face it every day."

"Dang it! No connection out here!" Hal said, annoyed.

"You will become my successor. The next Green Lantern..." his voice trailed off.

"No no no! Stay with me!" Hal yelled, shaking the alien.

"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, beware your power, Green Lantern's light!"

With that Abin Sur's head hit the ground, now lifeless.

"No..." Hal said, realizing he was unable to save the alien.

This death reminded him too much of his father's. It killed Hal to see someone else die the same tragic death that his father did. He picked up his phone to redial 911, when he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Something was rising, glowing green. Hal realized it was a ring. It flew onto Hal's finger and started to lift him up.

"Wait, what are you doing?" Hal asked, as if the ring might also be able to talk.

It had a mind of it's own. It lifted Hal into the air and sent him flying into space. Hal stopped trying to resist it. He realized that even if he was successful, he would still fall to his death. Hal started to lose air as he was lifted deeper and deeper into the atmosphere. A glowing green helmet appeared over Hal's head. Hal marveled at it. It wasn't a solid, it just looked like a light green light, yet his breathing was fixed.

He kept looking down, wondering how in the world he was going to get down from space. He figured he was as good as dead. Or maybe it was taking him to the planet the alien had come from. Would he be killed there. He did try his best to save the alien, but the alien only wanted to talk gibberish the whole time.

Hal eventually forgot he was flying through space with a green ring that belonged to a dead alien and fell asleep.
