Hal followed the group of experienced Lanterns that Scar had assigned to investigate the monster that he had warned them of. He stayed a good distance behind them, though. He had no idea how many Sinestro had turned against the Guardians. Hal spotted Kilowog in front, beside Sinestro and groaned. He knew that the sergeant was probably one Sinestro's best buds.
"So, Jordan," Sinestro had quietly fallen back in line and now flew alongside Hal. "You're back."
"I'm surprised you noticed," Hal replied, realizing he had no choice but to talk to the Lantern. "Seeing as you showed up for one of my training sessions."
Sinestro frowned.
"I wasn't meant to be a mentor, Jordan. I'm supposed to be in the field. To lead the Lanterns. Especially now that Abin Sur is dead."
This struck Hal as odd. Abin Sur, he must have been the leader of the Lanterns before he died. And Sinestro must have been second-in-command. Which means by getting rid of Abin Sur, Sinestro gained leadership. A perfect motive for killing Abin Sur.
But before Hal could say anything, Sinestro had gone back up to the front. They had arrived at the science tower. Once Hal had entered the tower, two Lanterns shut the door and stood by it so the monster couldn't escape and be let loose.
"Okay, we're splitting up," Sinestro said. "I want A and B teams to come with me to the sub-level 17 dissection room. The other teams search the rest of the tower and contact me if you find the scientist or the young Lantern that was taken."
Hal wasn't in Sinestro's 'squad,' so he just followed Sinestro down to the dissection room. He entered the room, followed by Sinestro's team, but it was empty. Hector had gone to another room. After they had explored for a bit, finding nothing, Sinestro motioned for his squad to follow him out of the room.
Kilowog waited back and approached Hal.
"We need to get out of here," he muttered quietly.
"What, why?" Hal asked.
"Very experienced Lantern's rings can sense danger. Mine isn't picking up on anything. Whatever that scientist has become it's not here."
"If you're ring can sense danger, can't Sinestro's?" Hal wondered aloud.
"Precisely why we need to leave. Sinestro is no longer loyal to the Corps, he is loyal to the monster, which means he's stalling." Kilowog replied.
"Stalling for what?" Hal asked, realizing that he was wrong about Kilowog's loyalty.
"I'm not sure, but his squad, they're all turned as well."
"How do you know?"
"Did you tell anyone what room Hector was dissecting Abin Sur in?"
"No. No one," Hal said, suddenly realizing something. "Wait, then how did he know to come down here?"
"Exactly. And his men followed along, not thinking a thing about it," Kilowog concluded. "Oh, and don't forget about the guards at the door. Getting out will not be easy."
Hal followed Kilowog up the stairs and watched as he approached one of the guards by the door. He said something to the guard and the guard squinted his eyes. Then, Kilowog head-butted the guard, who fell to the ground, unconscious.
The second guard tapped his ring a few times, then sent a green fist at Kilowog. Hal threw a brick wall at the fist, stopping it. Then, he sent the brick wall at the guard. It slammed into him and knocked him out.
Unfortunately, Hal wasn't quick enough. The second guard had alerted Sinestro's squad. They came onto the main floor and starting attacking Hal and Kilowog. They fended away the attackers, attacking them one by one. Hal and Kilowog were back-to-back, sending punch after punch. Kilowog summoned a giant green machine gun that took out the current row of Lanterns. Hal and Kilowog decided to make a break for it. They exited the door and closed it behind them. Hal summoned a block of metal to put in front of the door, holding the rest of the Lanterns off. Kilowog leaned over and panted. The machine gun had drained him.
"You go down to Earth and find Hector," Kilowog managed to say. "I'll alert the Guardians of the traitors and the location of the monster."
"How do you know Hammond's on Earth?" Hal asked.
"I overheard Sinestro say something about Earth and humans. He wants to destroy mankind, starting with Coast City. Stop the monster."
Kilowog flew off slowly towards the citadel. Hal flew towards the exit to Oa. He was going to stop this monster and save his planet.
