May 22, 2026

For so many years, May 22 was the date that reminded me of my own death.

It painfully reminded me of one of the most horrifying days on my life.

But now it symbolizes the day my daughter was born, and now all I can think about is how this day reminds me this beautiful thing was brought into life.

I stood behind my daughter, brushing her long brown hair.

She sat down in the small white chair set in front of a white vanity in her room.

She's wearing a baby blue cupcake dress with light pink lace around the bottom rim.

I'm wearing a dress similar to hers....she wanted us all to match her for her birthday

I use my fingers to twirl the small curls she possesses at the ends of her hair.

She starts to speak to me "Mommy, tell me the story again of you and daddy?"

I laugh at he words as I style her hair more "Again Nina? I'm sure you can tell it to me. Why don't you tell me?" I say to her as I continue to style her hair

I take two pieces of hair from the front of her head and twirl them to the back, clipping them into a pink bow set on the back of her hair.

"So!" Seraphina says in her baby voice "Daddy like mommy for a looooong time while they work, but Mommy no like daddy for a very long time!"

"Is that the version you're telling her?" Matthew says from the doorway, looking at the two of us from the mirror.

He's wearing a light blue button down shirt, with a pink bow tie. He wears it with dark grey slacks and old fashioned shoes.

"Look Nina! It's the candy man!" I say to the little girl in front of me jokingly pointing to her father

Seraphina lets out a small giggle while covering her mouth.

Matthew scoffs at my small comment but laughs lightly as he walks towards the two of us. He leaves a small kiss on the side of my head and kneels down next to the small girl to speak to her

"Hey my little Angel...Daddy wants to give you your birthday present now so you can have it for your party. You want to see it?" Matthew says to her softly

Seraphina shakes her head yes and excitement and Matthew slowly reveals the small velvet blue box from behind him.

She takes the box slowly from his hands and open it to reveal a necklace with a pair of wings on it but it held within the middle of it, a small cross. Me and the little girl both gasp at the beautiful gift.

"It's just like Mommy's!" The little girl exclaims admiring the small gift.

"That's right, you too have done a lot together. I want you to always be together" Matthew says to her softly

"Thank you Daddy!" Seraphina says as she leaps from her seat and hugs her father tightly.

Matthew mind links me to speak to me "I laced the necklace in holy water...it'll create a barrier around her." he says to me while hugging the small girl

I mouth to him the words "Thank you"

The girl lets go and takes a moment to look at herself in the standing mirror hanging in her room.

"Mommy...why do I have dirt on my neck?"

I look closely to see what she's talking about and see two little marks resting on her neck.
