Three, Ethan

"Get up Ethan!" My little brother Jason yelled, banging on my door.

I sat up in bed. "I'm awake!" I responded.

"Okay. I'll be in the kitchen," Jason said through the door.

"System on," I mumbled.

The computer thing (I was too lazy to remember the official name) responded, "Welcome, Ethan Thorne."

"What's the time?" I asked.

"Seven o'clock on the dot," said the computer.

I stood up and I heard Jett, my guide dog, jump off of my bed.

I reached down and pet him. "Morning buddy," I mumbled.

Jett just barked quietly.

I stumbled over to my closet and felt around for the knob. Finding it, I opened the closet door.

I grabbed a long sleeved shirt and jeans. I changed out of my pyjama bottoms and into my clothes.

People always question how I can get dressed without wearing my things backwards or something because I'm blind.

The answer is that it takes practice. But I never respond to those who ask me. They just aren't worth my time.

By the way, I wasn't born blind. I was in a car accident at the age of six that evidently took my sight.

I finished getting ready then exited my room and walked downstairs and to the kitchen, Jett at my side.

"Good morning Ethan!" Jason greeted.

"Morning," I said sleepily.

"How'd ya sleep?" My brother asked.

"Fine," I replied.

I opened the fridge and grabbed a water bottle. I sat at the kitchen table next to Jason.

"Did Maya already leave?" I asked, then took a sip of my water.

Maya was our older sister. She attended a local college here but still lived at home.

"Yep," Jason replied. He was silent for a second before he asked, "Are you going to eat anything more for breakfast, Ethan?"

"No," I said. I drank more of my water.

We sat in silence until I finished my drink. I threw the empty bottle in the trash. "I'm leaving," I told Jason.

"See ya later."

"Uh-huh," I said.

I opened the hall closet and retrieved Jett's harness. "Here boy," I called to my dog.

I heard him pad over to me. I carefully put on Jett's harness and grabbed the leash attached to it.

I put on my favourite Doc Martins then left the house with Jett.

I let my husky dog guide me to school. I was already dreading the first day. People hated me. They looked down on me like I was useless just because I couldn't see.

Whatever. It's not like they matter.

Jett barked twice, telling me we had arrived at school. "Thanks Jett," I said.

"Ethan! Over here man!" My best friend Adam called.

I walked towards his voice. "Happy first day of school," I said sarcastically when I arrived in front of him.

Adam laughed, "And to you as well."

"What've you got first?" I asked as we started walking towards the doors.
