Katy gasped. Her mother continued.
"The robbers spotted me. I was able to escape and report to the police, but they were a dangerous gang, Katy. I was advised by the Chief of Police to enroll in the Witness Protection Program, which protects witnesses to robberies, murders, or kidnappings by giving them a government-appointed new identity."
"It was too dangerous to come back for you or contact you at all. It destroyed me to have to leave you, but I couldn't risk your life."
"I became Roberta Rogers, a recent widower. I had to move to another state. I eventually tracked you down. I wanted to come see you, Katy, but I couldn't. Do you understand? I couldn't visit you because both of our lives would have been in danger."
Katy nodded. "I understand, Mom. Go on." Chandler continued.
"I kept selling clothes and artwork after that, but I always had to remember to use my new name. I did a yearly screening back then. These screenings were to detect illnesses I couldn't see. One year the screening detected an illness. And so it was then that I was diagnosed with bone cancer."
