She had to beat that snob. But her breath was coming in short gasps, and she was struggling. Struggling to breathe, struggling to run. Her legs were getting slower. Her strength and energy were being sapped away from her. Her breath was getting very short now.
Katy went into full-panic-mode and freaked out. She was having immense difficulty breathing. Unable to run any farther, Katy laid down on the track.
She knew people were staring but she didn't care. She could barely breathe. She assumed she was having an attack. She tried to call out to Beth and Anna, but couldn't speak. The world was spinning through her eyes.
Faintly, she heard two voices, asking if she was all right. They belonged to Beth and Anna. "Inhaler....bag....attack.....medics.." Katy managed to gasp. Amazingly, they understood.
Beth dashed off to get the inhaler, while Anna dialed 911 on her cellphone. Soon Beth returned with the inhaler. Gratefully, Katy pressed it to her lips. She took a deep breath from it, but it didn't help much.
She recalled her doctor mentioning that an inhaler doesn't always work in severe attacks and an ambulance is needed to take the patient to the hospital. "Paramedics are on the way," Anna said. Katy tried to calm down and relax, but it was impossible. She continued to breathe from the inhaler, but her breathing was still very shallow.
She saw a face peering down at her from above. Brianna.
"Are you all right?" she asked worriedly. "No!" Katy answered in a raspy whisper. "I'm sorry I said all those things to you before, Katy, but please don't die!" Brianna said in a tearful tone of voice. Katy couldn't believe it! Brianna was apologizing!
At that moment, Brianna leaned down to embrace Katy's still form.
Katy almost jerked away in surprise, but gradually allowed Brianna to hug her. Despite the way Brianna reeked of sweat, Katy didn't mind her arms being hooked around her. "Hang on, Katy," Brianna whispered softly into Katy's ear.
This gave her new hope. From somewhere in the distance, she heard the whine of an ambulance. Katy fell back farther on the track, closed her eyes, and waited for the paramedics to come.
