After two weeks, I was stronger, not as much as the doctors wanted me to be but at least I was getting there.
And like he promised, Nick never left, literally never left this time.
One of the nurses said that my dad himself brings him clean clothes everyday along with school work, baseball season will start about the same time that I’ll be going out, so he’ll be back for that just in time.
But then again, that wasn;t all he did at school.
“Aren’t the girls in school missing their boy toy?” I teased him, sitting up, bed and pillow propped up behind me, since I still get too tired moving alone.
I was going through his movie list on the laptop while he was starting with school work.
He chuckled and shook his head not bothering to answer.
“I mean, I know you are just one of them, but still, a handful could be really faithful to you…” I continued.
He had his smirk on, the one that meant this-was-a-stupid-conversation-but- I’ll- go- with- it. “Meh, they’ll live.”
“And I won’t?” he gave me a look, I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, yeah… you’re my hero who pulled me out of the abyss of death.”
“That’s right, and don’t you forget that.”
“I won’t…” I glanced down on my hands and frowned. “I don’t think I ever could.”
I hear him sigh, and I looked up and saw him toss his books on the side and made his way to me, “Everything will be fine jailbird.”
“How sure are you?” I asked.
“I’m still here aren’t I?” he says looking straight in my eyes before he sat down beside me and wrap his arms around me. “And you’re still here.” he took my hand in his, “Just like how it’s supposed to be and that won’t change, I promise.”
I nodded and rested my head on his shoulder, letting him run his hand through my hair.
The silence was broken with a knock and doctor Lionel Walking in. He glanced at me, looking worried at first, then he nodded as if satisfied.
“How are you feeling Keyana?”
“Better.” I said in a whisper.
“That’s good.” He says, standing by the foot of my bed, I moved closer to Nick, who gave my arm a light squeeze. “Your chart is saying so as well…” he flips to the next page, “how’s the hip?”
“It’s fine…”
“Pain has been on and off.” Nick says. I looked up at him, a brow raised. “What?” he asked, “I pay more attention than you think.”
I rolled my eyes and smirked, amused. “Pain has been on and off…” then I gave him a look, “mostly off.”
“Well, have you been taking your meds?”
I shook my head, “I don’t want anymore pain killers.”
“Keyana-“
“Look, if this will be a permanent thing then let it be.” I snapped, “Be a good reminder of what I almost lost.”
“Keyana…”
“I’m tired,” I said looking away from the doctor, “I’d like to get some sleep please.”
I hear him sigh and caught him nod before putting my chart back to its place and left.
“He was just trying to help.”
