"Sign this."

The tone was not polite, and you wouldn't have minded had he added a 'please'. But these were not kind people, so you just took the paper and pen from him to sign it.

"Come", the man instructed after you handed the document back to him.

"I'd like to say goodbye to my sister", you said.

"One minute."

You nodded thankfully and walked back into the room you had left Isa in. Immediately she ran to you and you bent down to let her hug you.

"(Y/n)...", she whined. "Why do you have to go?"

"I have to work so we can afford the hospital, Isa." You gently patted her head. "You have to work too, to get better."

"I don't want to get better if you're not with me..."

"Isa, I'm coming back", you said. "We just both have to be strong now."

"Are you really coming back?", she asked.

"Of course!", you laughed, even though you were not so sure yourself.

"Okay", she said, burying her face in your chest. "Then I'll work hard, just like you!"

"Thank you, Isa."

With a last kiss on her forehead, you bid farewell to her, squeezed her hand once more, then let her go.

"Goodbye", you said as she waved and ran off to the man who would bring her to the hospital.

"Next time we see each other, we'll both be a lot stronger", you murmured before you turned around as well, to face the fate that would await you now.

The gruesome screams you heard from the experimental laboratory arose goose bumps on your skin. You knew the procedure wouldn't be pleasant, but the almost inhumane noises told you that it would by far exceed your expectations.

Well, there was no turning back now, even if you wanted to run, it would be impossible. The doors in the small, dark room you were waiting in, along with several others, were locked. All you could do was wait until it was your turn.

To not succumb to nervousness, you observed the others. Like you, they all seemed to be poor, probably they had been promised money in exchange for being used as a testing subject as well. You wondered if they were chosen because nobody would care if they didn't survive. You were the same, after all. In the whole world, nobody, except Isa, would miss you if you happened to die here. But as long as there was one person, you couldn't die. You weren't allowed to.

One after the other, the people in the room were pulled into the laboratory, then the door was shut again and darkness surrounded you while the screams threatened to pull your mind into overwhelming panic. Still, you were one of the few who seemed to keep in together while other broke into whimpers and cries. Maybe that was because you were not doing this for your own selfish desire for money, but for your sister. Maybe the fact that you knew she needed you was what kept you sane.

Far too soon, the man who opened the door grabbed your arm and yanked you into the lab. The first thing you saw was a huge transmutation circle on the floor, and a lot of blood. There were cages with different animals, and in one corner of the room, there was a pile of corpses. Your skin started to crawl, a dark and heavy lump built in your stomach and cold sweat ran down your skin. You were going to die!

The guard, who saw the panic in your eyes, grabbed your arm even tighter, so you couldn't run away. You wouldn't have been able to, anyway, since your knees seemed to be made of jelly. The strength didn't return to body, up until the point you were thrown into the middle of the circle. When you, out of instinct, got onto your feet to run away, several men pointed spears at you, so you'd stay where you were.

"This'll be over soon", a deep and dark voice said, but you couldn't figure out who had spoken, as it was way too dark and you were filled with panic. Then, suddenly, the circle began to glow red. You knew it was over, all that remained was the hope that you'd survive this.

It was impossible to think any further, since the unbearable pain that followed eradicated every thought you could have formed in your mind. It felt like someone was ripping apart your entire body, piece by piece, in mere seconds. A gruesome noise invaded your mind, getting louder and louder, until it overshadowed even the pain.

And then it ended. Just before you passed out, you realised that it had been your own scream, blemished to unrecognizability.
