Virgil lay across his bed, frustratedly kicking his heels against the thin mattress.
Mom banged something against the ceiling.
"Shut up Virgil!" she yelled impatiently from downstairs.
Virgil sighed and flipped over onto his stomach. He couldn't stop thinking about Roman. His eyes were the colour of sunset behind the treetops, his smile could light up a room, Virgil couldn't stop imagining the feeling of Romans hand holding his.
"What the hell is wrong with me?" he thought. "I'm not supposed to feel like this."

School became a waking nightmare.
Patton got beaten up so much that the school made him transfer classes, to no avail, it didn't stop the bullying, it just made him harder to get to.
He tried not to let it affect him though, and he was always looking out for Virgil.
Logan, the boy who Patton couldn't stop staring at, became close with the pair, which didn't help Pattons situation at all. It was glaringly obvious that Patton had a crush on Logan, and while he hid it well, Logan admitted to liking Patton back. They dated in secret, stole kisses behind closed doors and held hands along empty corridors.
Roman, incidentally the most popular boy at school, hung out with them sometimes. He was always making checks on Patton, fixing up his cuts and bruises, so when Patton got beaten up again, Virgil stepped in to take the brunt of it for him. He had done this anyway to care for Patton, but having Roman look after him afterwards was a definite bonus.
He confided in Patton about the weird feelings he got around Roman, and Patton teased him playfully.
"Ooh, someone's got a bad case of the crushes!"
Virgil blushed a brilliant shade of scarlet.
"Wha- no, that's not- I mean, I don't think-"
"I second Pattons opinion. You do indeed seem to have romantic feelings towards Roman," said Logan. "You're cute when you use big words," Patton kissed Logan's cheek. "I have no idea what you just said."
"You guys are no help," muttered Virgil. "I can't have a crush on Roman."
"Well why not, kiddo?" asked Patton curiously. "You guys would be adorable together."
Virgil looked at Pattons hopeful, encouraging face and he didn't have the heart to tell him that his life was hellish enough without getting beaten up every day for being gay.
He briefly envisioned coming out to his mom, and felt sick. He had cleared four glass bottles off of her bedside table this morning, and he thought last night had been a good night. "Clearly not," he thought bitterly, sweeping up the broken glass on the floor.
He snapped back into reality as Roman approached their secluded table in the yard.
"Speak of the devil," said Logan drily. Roman said hello and smiled charmingly at the group and slid into a seat beside Virgil. The latter felt his heart rate increase. Roman looked concernedly at Virgil's black eye, which he had unsuccessfully tried to cover with makeup.
"You're should really tell a teacher about this," said Roman, brushing Virgil's bangs away from his face to examine the bruise. Virgil blushed at the touch, but didn't shy away.
"Wouldn't help," he muttered. "Didn't make a difference last time."
Patton shrugged, then winced, his shoulder was sore from break. Roman grimaced. "This is stupid. Why aren't the school doing something? He should be expelled, you know he should!" Roman looked genuinely angry for a moment. Virgil drew in his breath as Roman squeezed his shoulders. "You guys are so strong. I'm proud of you."
He shook his head, but smiled and left.
Patton was considerate enough to wait until Roman was out of earshot before wolf whistling.
"Ooh! Roman and Virgil sitting in a tree-"
"Shut up Patton, he'll hear!" Virgil said desperately.
"K I S S I N G!"
"Want to make your boyfriend shut up, Logan?" said Virgil, disgruntled. Logan gave a rare smile, and kissed Patton hard on the mouth. When he drew away, Patton was smiling and breathless.
"Well, that's an effective way to shut me up, kiddo," he giggled.
The bell rang and there was a mad rush for the doors.
Virgil slid into a seat beside Patton on the bus and tried to ignore the fluttery feeling in his stomach that he got when Roman waved at him.

When he arrived home, the door was unlocked.
Virgil swore. He had definitely locked it, so the only explanation was that Mom had gone out.
He stepped tentatively into the house. Empty bottles littered the hall. He crept into Moms room. The bed was empty and unmade.
He swore loudly. He never knew what to do when Mom got out. She could be anywhere. He couldn't calm the police or she'd get arrested. He didn't have anyone else to call.
Except Patton.
"I can't burden him like that," thought Virgil. But his hand slid automatically down to the call button. Patton answered almost immediately.
"What's up kiddo?"
"Patton. I need your help."

Sorry it's slightly shorter but I hope you enjoyed! Chapter 3 out soon! xoxo
