Virgil was on the floor.
Everything hurt, every inch of him was ringing with pain. It felt like he'd been struck by lightning, but not in the poetic sort of way. In the oh-my-god-it-feels-like-every-bit-of-me-is-on-fire-make-it-stop sort of way.
The barista was standing up slowly, rubbing the back of his head and blinking those godforsaken beautiful brown eyes in confusion-
Wait.
Brown.
Brown eyes.
Virgil squinted and wedged himself up onto his elbows. His chest felt like it was contracting.
This couldn't be happening.
Could it?
The room was swimming with colours so bright and vibrant that Virgil had to shade his eyes with his hand. Roman was wearing a red polo shirt with a golden crown embroidered on it. The hoodie which Virgil had assumed was black was actually a deep shade of purple.
The sky outside was a greyish-blue and the grass, oh god, the grass was green and lush and so bright.
Roman, who had oriented himself slightly faster than Virgil, took a few cautious steps forward and held his hand out to Virgil. "Are you- um, I mean, are you alright?"
Virgil gave the barista an incredulous stare and glanced down at the outstretched hand.
Oh, how he wanted to take his hand.
But the nervousness, the reality of what had just happened made him cling onto the table instead and stand up shakily.
There was a moment of silence so tense you could almost feel the electricity radiating between the two.
"I can see," Roman said softly, and Virgil felt his heart do some kind of elaborate gymnastic trick. "The colours... they're beautiful."
Roman walked slowly to the window and pressed his hand to the glass, eyes shimmering with emotion. "It's pink," he murmured, more to himself than to Virgil, gaze fixed on the cherry tree in the park across the road. "The tree is pink."
Virgil had sunk weakly into a chair, which was plush and red. "My name's Virgil," he managed to say after a pause, eyes fixed firmly on his knees. He wasn't sure what to say to this man, this stranger who fate had decided would be the love of his life.
An introduction seemed like a good place to start.
Roman turned away from the window and, cautiously, held his hand out again. "Roman. Roman King." He gave a sarcastic smile. "Don't mind the name. It's stupid, I know, I've heard every joke."
Virgil returned the hesitant smile. "I like it. You've got a theme running." He nodded at the lush, regal decoration of the coffee shop. Roman laughed politely, and then they were back to the awkward, smiling silence.
Silence.
Silence.
"Uh, so, I should probably get going," Virgil said, a notch louder than he'd meant, so that he jumped at the volume of his own words.
"No problem!" Roman said, with the same level of uncomfortable enthusiasm. "Here, um, d'you mind if u give you my number? Just 'cause, y'know-"
"Yeah," Virgil said, nodding quickly. "Yeah, no, sure. Uh huh. Sounds good."
He mentally told himself to shut the hell up while Roman smiled and scribbled a number on a napkin. He took the small napkin and muttered his gratitude, then stood up just as Roman went to offer him a hand, which ended with them practically nose to nose. Virgil flopped back into his seat, face a brilliant scarlet.
"Sorry."
"No, no, that was my fault."
And there they were again, with the gross silence.
Virgil stood up again, slowly, and Roman stood aside to let him pass. As he reached the door, Roman held his hand out again.
Virgil desperately wanted to take it this time.
There was the merest moment of hesitation and then Virgil shook his hand quickly. Another spark, less extreme than the first, seemed to go off between them.
"It was really nice to meet you, Virgil," Roman said softly, those gorgeous brown staring soulfully. Virgil found that his voice was sticking in his throat. He managed a bashful smile, trying not to think too much about Roman's soft hand in his, then he left the little coffee shop as calmly as he could manage and fled back to his apartment.
