Chapter 5
“Wow. You sounded like crap on the phone but look even worse.”
Sighing, I leaned against the door frame, looking at my annoying older brother. I hadn’t seen him since the night I picked up Nick from his house, which was now a week ago.
“Just because you’re my brother doesn’t mean you get to insult the Alpha,” I said, moving aside to let him in.
“I wasn’t insulting you, just stating a fact,” he walked up to me and wiped away the remaining tear on my cheek.
I knew he was going to ask why I had been crying, so I beat him to it.
“I kicked Nikki out of the pack.”
“I heard, but why?”
I only had to say one word, “Chad.”
He nodded, not looking surprised.
“I was worried when you didn’t show up to the pack meeting,” he said sitting down on the leather couch.
Again, I sighed and joined him on the couch.
“Well like you said I look like crap and trust me when I say I look better than yesterday.”
“It’s actually good that you didn’t come-“
“Xavier!” Evelyn came bolting across the room, jumping onto Xavier’s lap and giving him a big hug around the neck.
He smiled and hugged her back, “Hey, Eve. Did you take good care of mum like we agreed?”
She pulled back and looked at me, “Yes I did. We ate ice-cream and watched a movie together.”
“Let me guess. The Notebook?” he asked.
“Salt.” I answered.
Xavier turned his head to look at me with big eyes, “You made a four year old watch Salt? Are you out of your mind?”
“Hey that’s a great movie, plus Eve loved it.”
Yes Evelyn watched Salt. Why? Because I really needed someone- anyone to just keep me company and since Nick was out with friends (and still is) I only had the company of my daughter who pulled out a movie and asked to watch it.
I haven’t felt myself ever since I told Chad that I hated him. He made the hole in my heart bigger with each passing day that made me feel like I was dying. I tried to be strong for my kids but apparently I wasn’t strong enough since Nick wanted to leave the house because he said he didn’t want to see me like this and Evelyn kept on asking me why I was crying.
I was a mess and I just don’t know how to fix that.
“Hey.”
I turned to look at Xavier’s worried expression which made me want to cry again. I hated making others worry for me.
He spoke again, “I’m going to take Evelyn out, if that’s okay with you?”
“Sure.” I had absolutely no problem with that.
“Yay!” Evelyn jumped off Xavier’s lap, grabbed his hand and started pulling him towards the front door.
Xavier laughed already at the door, “I’ll bring her back by eight.”
And with that he left.
