Wan learned the elements with the seasons: fire in the summer, air in the fall, water in the winter, and earth in the spring. After he mastered an element he would then teach it to Abja. Abja would always been one element behind Wan. Whilst Wan was learning air, he would also be teaching Abja fire and so on until Abja too mastered the elements.

As some may know, Wan was the start of it all: the first Avatar. All Avatars come from him. And all Guardians come from Abja.

The Avatar is the protector of the world, the bringer of peace, the bridge between the spirit realm and the natural world. The Guardian is the protector of the Avatar and the Cycle. They are to make sure that the Cycle is never broken and continues to go on forever.

When there is a new Avatar, there is a new Guardian.

Their lives are forever linked. When the Avatar dies, so does the Guardian. And they always have a way of finding each other, no matter the circumstances.

After the death of Avatar Roku from the Fire Nation and Guardian Eirikr of the Earth Kingdom, the next in the cycle were born: Avatar Aang of the Air Nomads and Guardian Kishi of the Fire Nation were brought into the world.

Everything was working out fine. The monks were training Aang and the sages were training Kishi. And then Aang disappeared.

For one hundred years the Guardian was left without her Avatar. Growing to an old age as the Fire Nation attempted to take over the world without an Avatar to stop them.

Kishi would have given up hope of Avatar Aang returning after all those years if it wasn't for her connection to him. The string that linked the two together had stayed strong throughout all those years, throughout the war.

Once she completed her training with the sages, Kishi left the Fire Nation in search of her long lost Avatar. She traversed the entire globe in search of him and was unsuccessful. Kishi started at the Air Temples. The Guardian started at the Southern Air Temple, the birthplace of Avatar Aang. But it, like all the other Air Temples she later visited were desolate, riddled in the bones of those who once lived there.

Between her travels to the four temples, Kishi searched throughout the Earth Kingdom, never once finding a single trace of her Avatar. The Northern Water Tribe was the same. But as she neared the Southern Water Tribe, she felt something. A feeling that pulled her to the small village at the South Pole. She explored the village and the rest of the near inhabitable ice cap in her search. But found nothing.

The pull was always there, but leading her nowhere.

Kishi knew the Avatar was alive. She would know if he were dead. She would be dead if he were dead.

The Guardian didn't want to give up on him, but it was like he disappeared from the face of the Earth. Kishi was certain he was alive; so instead of wasting her days away searching for someone who wasn't there, Kishi decided to return to the sages and keep an ear out for any news on the Avatar or someone Airbending.
