Chapter 3
His (Ben's POV)
I listened to the sheriff explain to Riva what had happened to her aunt. I felt a sudden wave of anger towards Matilda. How could she leave Riv like that? The girl just lost her dad. Matilda promised she'd be there for her and they would mourn the loss of a father and brother together. Matilda was Riva's mothers little sister. She was supposed to take care of Riv.
Pieces of the sheriffs conversation caught my ears. Matilda tried to kill herself. She overdosed on some medication and left a note.
"You can see her in the morning once she's stable" the sheriff informed Rivie
"Okay, yes thank you sheriff" she smiled awkwardly but it never quite reached her eyes
"you can't stay alone tonight" he turned to me then looked back at her "maybe you could ask your boyfriend if he could stay the night" he eyes flickered back to me "as long as he can promise to behave himself" I felt sick to my stomach and could have taken a bat to his face in that moment but Riva snapped at him "he's not" pause "my boyfriend"
why did that hurt?
"Perfect then" the sheriff replied "I'll give you a call in the morning"
He turned "Good night Miss Watts" he nodded "Mr. Maher"
Once the police cars were all gone and the night settled a little around us I turned to Riva. I expected her to kick me out and had spent the last 5 minutes working on my argument but instead she let herself into the house and left the door open behind her.
"Riv.. I.. Don't think that .. well . umm.. just because.." I struggled for words
"Don't" was all she said, she walked quietly up to the front door and shut it behind me and then brushed past me up to her bedroom and a few moments later I heard her door click shut then I heard the locks turn. What did she think I was going to do? Sneak into her room? Tempting. I lay myself down on the couch. My lips were still burning from that kiss and I wondered how she hadn't felt it.
