Chapter 9 - You Changed Me

I wake up the next morning, still holding Hailey's hand and seeing my pillow have water markings. No, I didn't drool. I've been crying the whole night. Hailey wanted me to sleep right next to her, so I just rested sitting down, with my head leaning on the fluffy pillow I placed in front of me on her bed. I gently let go of her hand and I kiss her cheek as I went to the 'visitor bench' to get my things and take a bath. I got my phone to check for any messages or missed calls or anything and I see an unknown number with a text from 12 midnight. "Are you okay?" Could it be Mr. Secret spying on me or something? I texted back, asking who it was and to my surprise, he/she replied immediately. Who's up at 4:30 am? "It's Finn." Good thing no one saw me smile weirdly at my phone. I inquired him about how he got my number and he admitted that he slipped into Jack's phone while he was asleep and looked for me in the Contacts. "Cheeky.” I comment on that.

I ran off to the bathroom. When I quickly showered, I was still crying. Not really the sobbing type of cry. My tears were just dripping down together with the water running down my face. MY BROTHER GOT INTO AN ACCIDENT. How could I even fathom every single word right now? My heart is pounding faster and my body's becoming weaker. How did it happen?! I wish I knew. After today, I'll ask my dad to bring me to him, whether he likes it or not. I dress up into my loose peach long-sleeved top and black liquid leggings. I'm keeping my used clothes and towel inside my bag and my phone was ringing continuously. It woke Hale (Hailey's nickname) up and I just told her not to mind it. I advised her to just rest first before the nurse comes in an hour.

"Hello?" I answer the phone and I knew that it's Finn.

"Hey, Kris. It's Finn."

"Why are you up so early?"

"I couldn't sleep well."

"Why not?" Oh no. Did his parents scold him when they came back? I hope not.

"No reason. I just didn't feel like sleeping."

"But tell me you were able...to rest even for a while."

"Yes. Yes, I was able to rest. For like, 30 minutes. You?" he giggled.

"I slept pretty well, actually."

“Are you sure? I mean, after you had the talk with your dad, you…”

“Yeah. Cried a river. I think I’ll be fine.”

“If you need me, I’ll always be here for you. Always.”

“Since when did you decide to finally become my ‘shoulder to cry on’?” I giggled a bit.

“Since we met. Can I be honest with you?”

“Yes, of course. I wouldn’t want you to lie to me, anyway.”

“When I knew you, my mind and my heart welcomed something big in them. You see, I was on my way to a faraway place because I was aware that I didn’t care for anyone else than my family.”

“What do you mean?”

“I realized that I was a thoughtless guy. I’m insensitive about what others feel. But when I saw you sobbing, something stirred up in me. Something told me that I must wake up the good part of me. You changed me to be the better me.”

“Really, Finn? I…”

I heard the door open and close quickly and see my dad all dressed up for work.

“Uhm, Finn can we talk later? I just need to do some things and please take a rest?” He didn’t argue but just said ‘goodnight’ and we dropped the call.

“Dear.” Dad called out. But I didn’t look since I didn’t wanna look assuming that I was worth to be called like that by him. He probably meant Hailey.

“Kristine?” Oops so, he did mean me.

“Yeah?” I stopped shuffling around my gym bag and looked at him.

“Listen, I am really thankful for the talk yesterday night. It helped me think a lot and I have been working out some things late in the morning and contacting people.”  Wait, what does he mean contacting people?

“I called your mom and told her how this was getting out of hand.” No. No. No. No. My mom was the closest thing I can’t lose. She’d be very much annoyed of me for getting in this situation; by finding out things I should not be able to be finding out. She always warned me to forget about the whole divorce thing and my missing brother. But that was impossible. I was torn between how I can’t afford to lose her and how mad I am with her.

I have to admit, despite all the unfortunate events in my life mom did all her best to still make everything feel like it was still the same but it was so hard to take it all in. We we’re each other’s support system even though sometimes it gets really tough. But when she got back to work, she forgot about it, she forgot about me. Her daughter that never really accepted things the way she did.

Dad probably noticed how I drifted because of his statement. “Don’t worry. We had a good talk and no, she isn’t mad at you but she was actually surprised of how brave you were to stand up to us like that.” His eyes looked so sad. “We are the worst parents a person can ever have and we promised to make it up to you. That’s why we’re gonna look for Kristopher, together.” After those words came out, my jaw freaking dropped hard on the floor. “We’re gonna look for Kristopher, together." I hugged him so tight that I can bet I was suffocating him. For the first time in years I felt like I was going to be complete again; that our family was going to be together again. But then I see Hailey looking at us and reminding me that it would never happen anymore. Our family will always be broken and never repaired.

As much as I want to blame Hailey and Jonah, this was not their fault. It was my dad and their mom’s, I still wondered every night what that woman had that made my dad fall head over heels for her and replace my mom that quick. 

On the bright side, I knew we were going to find Kristopher.
