Chapter Two

The trip to the hospital was painful and the wait was long. I could feel my dad slowly slipping into a never ending pit of darkness, called death.

I didn't cry though. I sat, in the waiting room, unmoving and tired. I didn't know what to do but sit and wait for Julie. Even at the age of 21, I was still dependant on the people around me.

I couldn't call mom, that was ridiculous and I definitely was not about to contact the prince of England. The thought of my previous conversation with Jules brought a smile on my face and almost made me laugh.

"Is that a smile I see young lady. Your father is struggling with his life in the next room and you continue to smile as if you just won the lottery. What will you do if the doctor can't save him?"

These words from Julie immediately wiped the smile from my face and replaced it with a scowl.

I stood up ready to hug her, when she sat down instead and refused to look at me, forcing me to sit back down.

"Come on, Jules. Dad is a soldier and you know it. 'Just a matter of time before he comes jumping out of those doors and everything will go back to normal. It's like mum used to say, don't let your mind bully your body, you don't have to fret, dad will be okay" I said, a small smile gracing my lips again.

Juliet, however, was not amused. "Which mother said that? The same one that abandoned you for money and a better life?"

I didn't answer. I couldn't, neither was I given time to ponder on it as the doctor stalked into the room, clipboard supported by glove clad fingers. "I would like to speak to Miss Grayson". His eyes travelled around the empty room before landing on us.

Juliet quietly got up and gave me a sad smile before leaving. I would talk to her later; she was my best friend after all.

I turned back to the doctor and forced a smile on my face. "Miss Grayson, your father has just been through an operation but it was not easy. We had to use Kiloton Degocliya which is very rare and expensive. Here is you bill; you can be with your father shortly." I thanked him softly then sat back down.

Treatment: 100$

Service: 40$

Tools: 50$

Kiloton Degocliya: 1 023 500 $

Total Treatment: 1 023 690$

My eyes threatened to plunge out of my sockets at the amount. However, I calmed down and entered the room, only to be greeted by my father's warm smile. All my previous worries immediately flew out the window as I ran to him, crying.

We didn't say anything for a while, just sat and held each other. I knew we wouldn't afford the bill and though Julie wouldn't mind helping, I couldn't ask her. That left me with two choices. Either sell my kidneys to pay off the bill or visit the queen of England.

I knew what had to be done.
