I lifted my head off my pillow as the sound of a knock on my door filled my ears. Placing my phone on my table, I opened the door, thinking it was Rena.
To my surprise, it was the queen herself, immediately I felt self-conscious as I was in my pajamas, hair flying frantically around my worn-out face.
Ignoring my scruffy appearance, she gave me a genuine smile before lifting 4 shopping bags that lay neatly in her hands. She placed them down before giving me a warm hug.
I returned the hug before opening the door wide enough for her to enter. I grabbed the two more bags that lay at her feet before shutting the door behind me.
Mrs. James swiftly placed the bags on my bed before sitting next to them, motioning me over. I put down the remaining 2 before joining her, prepared for the lecture that was to follow today's events.
"Livia, can I just tell you how disappointed I am that you did not let me treat you today?" she started off with a small frown. I immediately felt bad and went to apologize, when she raised her finger to her lips, signaling me to remain silent. I did.
"Every since I was pregnant with Elli, I used to hope that I had a girl. She would be the most beautiful princess in the world. I know it seems silly but that's what I thought.
I imagined how we would match in extravagant outfits and go on shopping trips, visit the most amazing countries and be the best of friends. On the day Elliot was born, I was a little disappointed but I promised myself that I would love him just the same, with all my heart.
It was 2 years after he was born when my doubts about him kicked in. he would arrive home late, skip family bonding time and always seemed too busy for me.
I brushed it off though and continued with life. Then after 2 years of Elliot being born, you came into this world. I couldn't be happier, even though you were the result of my husband cheating on me every second day.
I felt like I knew you since forever and the fact that you loved me more than your own mother warmed my broken little heart.
But, I couldn't stop there. I really wanted you to marry my son, so that you could be my daughter in some other way. It sounds very creepy and weird I know that, but when you can't have any more children and you wish for another, what would you do? I was desperate.
Everything was going as planned when your mother decided that she had enough of me and left for America. At first I wasn't sure what the problem was. I doubted that I was a terrible friend or I was too uptight.
But the real reason was because she fell pregnant again with the child which belonged to my husband. I hated her after that and immediately divorced him when I found out.
Then 1 year later, I got the word that she was back in England and with my husband, and had abandoned hers in America to raise their child. But even she couldn't keep him satisfied so she left him and married a rich bozo. The fact that he was three times her age did not faze her as she lived off his never ending bank account.
Another year later, she apologized to me and said she had realized all of her problems; I forgave her and went on with life. Though, I didn't even hate her for stealing my husband or ruining my life, I hated her for tearing apart your family, making you and your father suffer and leaving you'll to beg just for basic necessities. Her greed disgusted me and it still does up till today.
But you, Olivia, you are nothing like her. You are caring, hardworking, and strong and would never run away from a tough situation into the arms of a rich man. That is why you are perfect for my son.
So, when I offered to buy you clothes today and you refused, I knew the exact reason and so I still went out to get you all of this. Please, do not give it back; nothing will hurt me more than that.
Just think about what I said, and have a good night."
At the end of her speech, she could barely look at me and made a quick move for the door. I stopped her, allowing my arms to enclose around her in a firm but warm embrace.
"Thank you, for everything. I really appreciate it Mrs. James and I will forever remember everything you have ever done for me and my family", I told her, my voice muffled by the material of her shawl.
"Please, call me Naomi. I don't want any formalities", I smiled at her reply before allowing her to walk out, leaving me with a light heart and a heap of new clothes.
I was grateful that someone was there for me after so long.I didn't think it would be possible to hate my mum more than I already did, up until this very moment. She tore apart my family, I think it's time I do the same.
Hope you carry an appetite mum, you're about to get a taste of your own medicine.
