I told her a genuine ‘Thank You’ and opened the doors. I don’t think I’ve been this nervous since Lucas had that car accident three years ago. I sighed. Thinking about Lucas didn’t make me mad anymore, just upset because I missed being able to match a great memory with a good person.
There was no one in the library other than Mrs. Jones, the librarian. She smiled at me as I sat down at a table next to the Young Adult bookcase. I can't believe they still consider Harry Potter as a Young Adult book, they should move it to the All Ages section. It was only 3:45 PM, so I decided to pick out The Chamber of Secrets and start reading.
I looked down at my phone a little while later and saw that it was five after four. Not one person had come in or gone out of the library since I sat down. Where was my mystery man?
Just then someone tapped my shoulder and I jumped. I turned around to see Josh, you know, the player from algebra.¨Um, can I help you?¨ I asked him. I thought came into my head that maybe he was the one who was sending me the notes. I pushed that thought aside because I didn't want to physically cringe in front of him.
“Uh, yeah. Someone told me to meet here at four but I had detention so I was a few minutes late. Wait-why are you here?” He looked at me suspiciously. I bet he was having that same thought.
“Someone told me to meet them here at four too. Were you getting a bunch of notes over the course of the day?”
“No.”
“Oh…”, I felt dumb. I thought maybe if he had gotten notes too then somehow our people knew each other or something.“I just kept getting roses in my locker. It was weird. And then at the end of the day there was a note with no rose saying to meet here at four o’clock.”
“Hey! That’s exactly what was happening to me, only with notes, and not roses.”I couldn’t find an explanation. It was already ten past four and still the only people in the library were Mrs. Jones, me, and Josh. A terrible thought came into my mind. What if I got stood up. What if this was all some cruel joke to embarrass the dorky girl. Everyone at school probably knew about it and was going to be waiting outside the school for me to come out, defeated.
“Do you think we got stood up?”, Josh suddenly said.
“I was just thinking that. I don’t know why you would get stood up though. Me, I can understand, but you?”, I told him.
“Well I agree with you, on the part about me. I’m really attractive, I don’t get stood up. But you are very smart and beautiful, I can’t see any reason for someone bailing on you.”, he told me.
I blushed. “Well thank you, but I’m not staying here for three hours waiting on my mystery man. Fifteen minutes late with no sign or anything. I’m going home.” I stood up and collected my things. As I put The Chamber of Secrets back on the shelf, Josh stood up also.
“Yeah, you are probably right. It’s me, I don’t wait on people standing me up, I’m supposed to be the one standing them up.”
“Charming.”, I told him with a sarcastic grin.
“Hey, would you maybe like to go get some ice cream or something? I mean, I assume this mystery man was going to be part of your plans for the rest of today, and my plans were kind of ruined also.”
Was THE Josh actually asking me on a date? Really? I’m very surprised, and slightly suspicious, but he was right. I was hoping on being with my secret admirer today, and I don’t have anything else to do.
“Yeah, why not.”, I told him as I texted Sophie. I just know that Sophie would be freaking out, so I offered the idea to go out the side door instead of the front where her car was.
He smiled. “Alright then, let’s head out.”
