CHAPTER ONE:

I made it one week without something going wrong.

My last day of my junior year had ended a week ago.

I finished with decent grades and a most unenjoyable prom, but I finished and now I was one year closer to graduating.

None of this... was never suppose to happen.

But now, here I am. Sitting in a police department, being interviewed as a witness of a hit and run.

My hands were still trembling in shock even though the accident had happened hours ago. The initial shock of it all, never left my body.

"Lexi? Could you tell us what you saw?" The female cop asked gently for the second time now. The first time she asked, I was so caught up in my own thoughts, I didn't even hear her.

"I-I," I stuttered, not being able to put my thoughts into words. I looked up at her helplessly, tears welling up in the corners of my eyes.

"Take your time." The cop, who I had learned was named Jasmine, told me.

It felt like I'd been in this room for hours, and maybe I had been. They called my mom, but she was away for the weekend for a college reunion event. When they had put me on the phone with her, she told me that she was already packing up her stuff to leave the event early and that she'd been home tonight. Just the thought of her, made my chest tighten and only made my urge to cry worse. She always knew what to say to make me feel better and I wish that she was here now.

I cleared my thoughts and instead focused on what needed to be said. I looked up at Officer Jasmine again, preparing myself to put everything I saw into words.

I took a deep breath, letting it out through my nose.

Then, I began.

As I walked out of the interview room, taking a sigh of relief I caught sight of the other guy involved in the crash, who in the midst of everything, I never got the name of.

The police officer directed me to sit beside him and told me to wait until my friend showed up to pick me up.

Officer Jasmine looked between us, "Lexi, this is Noah." She told me, smiling gently at us.

Noah glanced over at me, his face completely expressionless. His dark brown hair was a curly mess atop his head and he looked so exhausted, but I couldn't blame him. From what I had seen, he was close with Austin.

I had remembered Austin from high school. He was a year above me, but that didn't stop me from knowing his name. He was pretty popular amongst the girls and he always managed to get himself entangled in some kind of drama. But Austin was most known for his ridiculous sense of humor and his kindness towards underclassmen. Though I had never had a run in with him until tonight... I'd heard many stories of his inclusive attitude with all students, no matter the age or any other differences.
