The next day school seemed a lot more productive. I was ignoring my besties as planned, but it seemed less intimidating now. I don't know why, but it felt like a new ray of hope just immerged. Call it cliché but it was true. Everything around me seemed so much more positive, and it was all due to one person. But the question was where was he? I had been roaming around my high school like an idiot all morning trying to figure out where Wesley was, or what class he had. So far I had no luck. I mean gosh, how difficult could it be to find one of the school's most popular boys?
The warning bell for first period rang and I, unwillingly, turned around to go to class. Maybe our deal would have to wait slightly longer to initiate. As I was passing my locker I remembered that I needed my textbook so I stopped by, but at the exact moment something extraordinary occurred. Jeremy walked up to me!
"Uh, hi Emma" he said.
'Hi!' was what I wanted to say, but what came out was a small choking sound. What the hell happened!
He looked at me with an awkward face, not that I blamed him since whatever sound came out of my throat deserved it.
"Anyways...I wanted to ask if you had Amber's phone number?"
"Why?" my voice came out no less than a whisper that had an obvious tone of envy.
"Well I think you know that I play and write my own songs, right?"
I nodded with my head hung low.
"And I think you may know about the school dance that's coming up, and I needed to talk to Amber since she's the main organizer. I had this epic plan for playing my own song on stage for the school this year, and-"
"Yeah, I'll pass the number down to you during Bio" I said a little to quickly.
I slammed my locker shut, again, a little too hard and turned my face away so Jeremy wouldn't notice the tears that were whelming up.
"We have Bio together?"
Again another comment that proved my in-existence.
"Yeah" I said walking away.
What a start to another glorious day.
***********
Lunch was usually a time where I was actually able to be myself, but that was because I was with people who actually understood me. At least that's what I thought. I paid for my lunch at the cafeteria, and decided where I wanted to go and sit. Sitting near the window was my usual spot, but that was where my so-called friends were sitting. Veronica and Amber both turned to look at me, but our eye contact was brief. I quickly looked away to the rest of the tables. There was the table with the nerds, but god-knows that I couldn't tolerate them. And this is coming from a super smart geek herself. I continued my walk through and set my eyes on Wesley and Riana and a group of other cool kids. Wasn't he supposed to help me? Wesley was laughing along with his friends, but he suddenly frowned when he saw my face. I looked away far too fast, and exited the cafeteria.
I didn't realize when I started to cry but quickly calmed myself. The field was empty, and our school luckily had a small picnic table around the corner. I sat down and stared into the empty surroundings when I heard a faint sound.
"Emma!"
Was that Wesley? I wiped my face with my hands one last time and that was when he came into sight. He looked worried as he jogged up to me.
"Hey!"
"Hey" I croaked.
"Were you crying?"
"What! No" I added with a fake laugh.
"Em look, I know you better then yourself. The last time I saw you like this was when your dad went away"
I looked down towards my hands because the tears started to whelm up again.
"Hey" he said as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
I slumped up against him and buried my face into his chest, and cried. He wrapped his arms around me and didn't say anything until I stopped which seemed like forever. Even though I stopped crying I still stayed there with him cuddling me. I suddenly felt much better. I untangled myself from him and wiped my eyes.
"So you wanna tell me what's up?"
I cleared my throat and said "I-um-I don't know actually. Yesterday I had gone down to write for the school paper during lunch since Mr. Russel was supervising, but today I think I just got overwhelmed since I had to spend lunch in the café. I-I didn't know where to go, and then I thought you were going to help me but you were with...your friends"
"Why didn't you go to Amber and Veronica?"
"I'm sort of not talking to them" I said scratching my head.
Wesley's eyebrows shot up, but he didn't say anything.
"O-okay, but I was going to help you. Afterschool. We never meet during lunch anyways, and besides because of the parent teacher interviews schools half day. I thought I would meet up with you afterschool"
Wow. Was it just me, or did he actually know that I didn't want to talk about Amber and Veronica? And did he actually plan things out?
"Oh-um, yeah of course" I stammered.
He smiled and ruffled my hair, and I slapped his hand away. He always did that when we were kids, and I hated it but today it made me smile.
"There you go, you can do it" and I burst out laughing.
He smiled back at me, but was quickly distracted by my food tray.
"Are you going to eat that?" he asked.
I laughed and shook my head. He quickly grabbed my burger, and I started to eat my fries.
"So, I was wondering if you wanted to go to the mall afterschool today?"
I scrunched up my eyebrows and asked "Why?" .
"Emma dearest, you need a major make over and the best way I can think of is starting from your fashion sense"
I looked down towards my overalls and up towards him.
I opened my mouth to protest but he stopped me.
"Don't! That is not going to work, at all honey. You are coming with me and that's final, see you at your locker"
"Okay boss" I said with an eye roll.
"Hey remember the time-"
And that was how I spent one of the best lunches of my whole high school career. With that one small line I was brought back into time with a friend that I almost forgot that I had. Wesley.
So what do you think? I honestly love them, because I think I can sort of connect.
