When I was little, I watched as most of my friends got messages from their soulmates in the form of colorful lines on their arms or face. I waited for years before I finally accepted that I was an Alone. It didn't hurt as badly as I thought it would, though, because my best friend, Annabelle was an Alone, too.

She helped me stay strong, because she didn't care that she was an Alone. She kept the bullies away and made sure that I had a shoulder to cry on whenever I was sad. I reciprocated by always being there for her. For example, whenever she had a soccer game that she was super nervous about, I would be in the stands cheering the loudest I could. It cheered her right up.

Now, I know that my mom thought that she was an Alone, but I was different. I could almost feel the emptiness inside my soul without my soulmate. With time, I've learned to accept it and be happy, but it wasn't always like that. Let me tell you the story of my life and how I learned to accept who I was. I'll start the week before the picnic.

I woke up in a daze, my alarm next to me buzzing, like an annoying fly. I hit it, sitting up in bed and rubbing my eyes. Another hurtful day at school.

I quickly dragged myself to the bathroom, brushing out my pink locks and careful to be extra careful with my ears. Dressing quickly in my uniform, I ran down the stairs for breakfast. My ride to school was gonna be there any minute.

"Morning, sleepyhead," my dad said when he saw me. I looked up and saw him sitting at the table, reading something on his phone. He was dressed for work and was eating some cereal before he went out. Mom was seated next to him, scolding my younger sister, Nora, for playing with her food. Both Mom and Nora were still in their pajamas.

"Morning, Dad," I yawned out, grabbing a piece of toast from the counter. I stuck it in my mouth and grabbed my school bag before racing out the door, waving a goodbye to my family.

I saw Aphmau's car pull up to the curb, Annabelle in the back. "Hey, Jewel!" she yelled as I hopped into the backseat with her. I felt the car move as I buckled, Aphmau behind the wheel and Annabelle's older brother, Adam, in the passenger's seat. Adam looked almost exactly like Annabelle, just taller and more masculine. Same black hair, same brown eyes, same chubby face, everything.

"Hey, guys," I said, giving Annabelle a quick hug and ruffling Adam's black hair. He pushed my hand back with a huff and smoothed it back out. I laughed at him, pushing his hair back to where I had ruffled it. We went like this for a good minute before Annabelle started to whine that I wasn't paying attention to her.

"You're my friend," she whined, playfully pouting, "I should get the most attention,"

I rolled my eyes and rested my head on her shoulder. She put her arm around me and gave me a small hug. It felt amazing.

"So, are you two excited for the picnic this weekend?" Aphmau asked, looking at me and Annabelle in the rearview mirror.

Annabelle jumped up in excitement, nodding her head, but I stayed seated. I wasn't exactly ecstatic, since I didn't like being out in the sun for a long time. I was extremely pale, just like my parents, and I could burn really easily.

"Why does it have to be in the sun?" I asked, propping my head up to look out the window.

"I know you don't like the sun, but it'll be good for you," Aphmau said sympathetically, "Just wear as much sunscreen as you can,"

I huffed, but nodded, since I really did like spending time with my family and friends. Maybe next time we could do laser tag and milkshakes instead.

We pulled up to the school a few minutes later, each of us giving Aphmau a quick kiss goodbye. I was pretty close to her, so it was pretty normal.

"Have a good day!" she called to us as she drove away to work.

I turned away from the road and faced the school, a sour expression on my face. Annabelle made the same one as she stood beside me.

"If we ever have a good day here, I'll eat my socks," Annabelle huffed, starting our trek into the building we both hated.

We were constantly being bullied because of the fact that we didn't have soulmates. Annabelle was able to keep her head held high and ignore the jeers and jokes, but I wasn't her. I had been pushed into lockers, shoved into thorn bushes, and hit by other students. The teachers did nothing, since they were all biased about it. They couldn't care less if two Alones were being bullied, as long as their parents weren't rich or influential.

I walked into school and went to my first class, Art. It was the only thing in school that made me happy, other than Annabelle, because I was able to put what tormented or made me happy onto paper. I quickly became known as the artist throughout my years at school, getting in trouble in class for drawing, rather than talking.

"Hello, Miss Ro'Meave," my teacher, Ms. Alexandria, called to me as I walked in. I waved to her, a smile making its way across my face as I sat down in the front of the classroom. I took out my sketchbook and began to draw to pass the time before class started.

I had been working on this piece for a little less than a week and it was almost finished. It was a fanart of one of my favorites shows, My Little Horsie. I'm not the kind of person to draw anything bad, so I usually draw OCs. This one was a colorful little pony that I called Rainbow Sherbert. Her coat was just a pure white, but her mane was a curly, poofy mass of rainbow swirls. She was beautiful to me.

"Whatcha drawing Alone?" I heard a sickly sweet voice say behind me.

I kept in my hiss as my tail straightened and my ears flattened. I turned to face my usual bully, Adora. She was a girl from a very high class family, who absolutely hated me. Her hair was a mix of purple and green swirls that curled around her symmetrical face. Her eyes were a shade of green that was slightly darker than the green in her hair, but they seemed to glow with evil light. She always had at least two of her "friends" at her side, that day, it was a red haired girl and a yellow haired girl.

"What do you want, Adora?" I hissed, turning back to cover up my drawing. I knew that she would try and garb for it. I was right.

She shoved her manicured hand under my arm and pulled out my drawing. She held it above my head as I went to grab for it.

"Is this a pony from that stupid show my little cousin watches?" she mocked, eyeing the drawing with a distasteful look.

"Give it back!" I yelled, looking to Ms. Alexandria for help. I didn't see her anywhere in the room, so I wasn't getting any help as I watched her show the rest of the students in the class.

"This isn't even that good," the red headed girl with Adora exclaimed, pushing my drawing away from herself. The yellow haired girl quickly looked it over, her smirk twisting into a grimace.

"EW" she yelled, pushing it back towards Adora. The rest of the class quickly followed suit, shoving the drawing between themselves while I chased after it. Once it made its way back to Adora, angry tears were streaming down my face.

"Give it back," I said quietly as Adora took a hold of it and held it aloft. I was beginning to get tired, needing my inhaler once I got it back.

Adora looked me in the eyes and said, "No," With that, she put the drawing between her hands and ripped it. Once, twice, thrice, four times, until it was like confetti, falling to the ground.

I watched as all the pieces flattered to the ground, my tears increasing. I quickly grabbed my things and ran out of the room as the bell rang, the laughter from all of the other students ringing in my ears.
