Dominique Williams

"And remember seniors.. if you fail any classes, there won't be a light at the end of the tunnel."

Many seniors laughed at our principals corny joke, and I just shook my head.

Today is the first day of my senior year, and the last thing I want to do today is listen to my principal lecture the senior class about things we've already known since freshman year. I've been waiting three long years for my senior year, and it's bittersweet that i've made it. Many eager seniors were ready for prom, spend the last year of high school with friends, or to just simply be done with school like I was.

Me, I already knew I would be going to Spelman College just like my mom did— the well known all women's historically black college in Atlanta. I want to be an elementary teacher just like my mom was. Then, maybe I would have some of her teacherly ways that I always adored of her.

After the very long assembly about grades, prom, graduation, and everything else senior related— we could finally go to lunch. Just as I gotten my nasty school lunch, I realized I didn't know where to sit at. I really have no friend group and it's a bit late to try and make new friends now.

After looking like a lost puppy for a while, I found a vacant table and decided to sit alone. Freshman me wouldn't be caught dead sitting alone, but it took a long time to learn that I would rather be alone than with people that don't have my best interest at heart.

"Wassup, Dom?!" My best friend, Dominic, yelled while drawing attention to us and almost making me choke on my already dry chicken sandwich from startling me.

He was always the outgoing one compared to my reserved self, so it always balanced out.

"Boy, why you always so loud and how many times do I have to tell you my name is Dominique and not Dom?" I sighed, rolling my eyes at him.

Dominic and I have been neighbors since we were in fifth grade. He's a nuisance, always loud and outgoing, but great company. Even my dad and his parents are great friends, we just all clicked.

We've been friends throughout middle school, but when we came into high school, it's like we became distant. Of course he had his basketball going on and I had my.. stuff going on, it just feels like we grew apart sometimes. I just missed how close him and I have been. But, we've been coming together the past summer, so all is well for now.

"And how many times I have to keep telling you, I don't care." he rolled his eyes, mocking me. "Plus, our names too close alike."

"Anyways, you excited to be almost done with high school and ready for the real world?"

"Yo, this year finna be too lit, deadass." Dominic's thick New York slang still makes my stomach do backflips like a gymnast.

"i'm just ready to go to Spelman." I said happily while I threw away my trash from my lunch and headed to my fourth period class, Dominic trailing right behind me.

"Don't you want to see more of this world than just boring ass Georgia and this heat." He teased while looking down at me.

"If it's going to New York and seeing them big rats with timbs on, I'll pass." I joked and we both laughed.

We always made jokes about where we both are from, but we just take pride in our home states.

"Yo, chill out." He laughed. "I'm about to go to basketball tech, have fun in ya AP chem class, my lil nerd." He teased and gave me a hug.

"B-Bye, Dominic." I stuttered and turned around to go to my class before he could say anything else.

"Why does he have to be so cute." I thought to myself while walking through the crowded hallway of Freewell High school.

As much as I did want to pursue Dominic again, I have too much going on this year. From my AP classes, work, and getting accepted into my dream college, I didn't have time to worry about a relationship. Yet alone breathe.

But whatever happens, shall happen.
