Chapter 3

Memories

I'm jolted back to reality by my uncles harsh voice. "These two have disobeyed clan rules, and therefore must be punished!" The crows cheers. Hinata's eyes are urgent, pleading with nothing to not let this happen. I look back with more emotion on my face than I've ever showed to anyone except her. Right now, that doesn't matter.

The judge behind us cracks his gavel on the stand, making us both jump. "Please turn to face me, mister and misses Hyuga." He commands, shuffling through papers. We do so, and a guard comes up to my cousin, binding her with chains now. I scowl to myself.

"Hyuga Neji..." I look up. The judge is looking at what seems to be my file. "Seems under circumstances that you'll be getting the brunt of this!" He says with a sick grin, looking over his glasses at me. I am not phased. That was the point, after all. I can see out of the corner of my eyes that Hinata is crying softly. I never meant to hurt you.

After a few minutes of unbearable silence, and the judge looking through more papers, he clears his throat and leans into the microphone. He talks with ugly slowness, his s's drawn out, his voice like broken glass, or salt being rubbed into an open wound. He says, "For the sake of the clan and the village, all knowledge of this case will be discarded. Anyone who knows anything is hereby sworn to silence. We must erase this from clan history."

He slams his gavel down again, his piercing eyes staring right through me. "Furthermore," he continues, casting his sickly sweet smile over us, "Hyuga Neji will be sentenced to-"

{START FLASHBACK}

Soft lips press against my ear, drawing me close through the darkening air.

"Kiss me... Neji..."

{END FLASHBACK}

"Death."

He finally finishes. Everyone expect Hinata and I gasp, our faces white. The reality hits me harder than I expect, and Hinata bursts into tears. "As for you, lady Hinata..." The judge taunts, saying her name like some kind of disease... "You will marry right away, and will be monitored by staff 24/7. And don't forget our little vow of silence on the case..." His crooked teeth look like fangs.

I try to move closer, I try to comfort my cousin, but the judge just barks at me to stay put. Hinata jumps at his command, starting to sob harder. I grit my teeth. The hardest thing about this is knowing that I'm leaving her... But it's for the best. The best for her... I care not of myself anymore, but of my beautiful raven-haired cousin.

The memories start...
