Prologue:
Haley,
Wherever you are, I hope this gets to you. The days go by so fast and its killing me not knowing if you're okay. I'm sorry I couldn't go with you and the group. I needed to stay, you know that. I love you and I did this for you. I'm sorry of all the things I wanted to do but couldn't. I wanted to be there for you. I wanted to protect you from the Infected. But there are too many of them now. And I am so weak. I don't want this to be a goodbye, so I won't say it. I'm coming after you. I won't stop at anything. I need to feel the deep richness of your skin, smell the sweet summer day that lingers in your hair, and I need to kiss those soft lips of yours. Thinking about you not being here makes me want to cry out death and ask for his dagger. I need you. I'm coming for you.

Chapter 1.
I was in 8th period on a Friday during school when the alarm rang. Not any school alarm, fire alarm or tornado alarm. It was a different alarm. The moment I heard it I knew we were doomed. The voice on the overhead speaker gave us instructions in a frightened voice.
"School is done for today, please pack up and hurry to a bus. Don't stop for any reason, just get on the bus and listen to the driver. They will drive you to co-sector 1-5 depending on what bus you're on. Leave now!"
Emily Brennen along with what seemed like a million other kids piled out and ran to the bus in front of me. Emily is my best friend; she's practically my sister, so thinking ahead we had already planned to sit next to each other. We picked the seat on the right side about 5th seat from the emergency exit door. I was just about to tell her how odd I was feeling when my thoughts were interrupted by a screeching sound that could only be assumed as a scream. I frantically looked around when it sounded again. It was not a normal scream, not like a scared scream. It sounded like a painful scream. I jumped up from the bus seat and in the corner of my eye I could see a woman standing over another woman.
The woman on the ground was surrounded by a dark liquid that spread drastically on her clothes and all around. The other woman looked as if she were biting into the woman's body that now lay limp. I squinted my eyes while reaching over Emily to get a better look. I stood there frozen in horror, because indeed she was biting her. She took bite after bite, tearing the skin as she tried to get deeper into the flesh. She suddenly stopped; I heard a cracking noise as her palms pushed very hard against the dead woman's body. Then the infected woman shot up and began chasing after an innocent bystander. The bus was silent until something started banging on the bus doors. The hands were not in panic, they were in need. He was one of them. And only I knew it quickly enough to realize we were in danger.
I scrambled to the back of the bus trying to open the door, but it was locked. I began pounding on the window of the door, but that was no help. I heard a loud crunch and slowly turned around to face it. The bus driver was being attacked. I couldn't believe my eyes. It sent the whole bus in chaos; every student busting windows to get out alive. Minutes felt like hours trying to open the exit. The door swung open, but it was too late, two other students from the front were ripped to shreds. Terror and instinct kicked in. The kids started fighting back. I saw them get on top of the diseased man and bash his face in. While I was exiting the no longer safe bus, I could still hear it gasping for air. I climbed out not aware of all the danger that surrounded me. I just began running. For a split second, I turned and saw the angry mass of people coming from the school with the look of hunger in their blood shot yes. Emily was still following behind me. I grabbed her hand to make sure I didn't lose her. When you're running for your life, you don't think. You make rational decisions and go on fear. We turned the corner by a bunch of bushes and knelt down to rest.
