Chapter 2
A few hours passed and I began looking for something to occupy myself with. Rummaging around the art supplies, turning on and off the computer, cupping my hands over the window and faintly trying to look through the paint. Bored with myself I sat up on the counter and looked over everything. Though the light was dim and I could barely make out where she was, Emily's face looked peaceful while she was slept. That's a change from the usually distressed. That's the only thing keeping me from talking to her about anything that would upset her. I know she's worried about her siblings. She is in the middle of two brothers, and has a sister who's only 18 months old. How could I comfort her? There simply was just no way. I couldn't tell her everything was going to be ok. Because I knew, in the pit of my stomach, nothing was or was ever going to be ok.
"How long have you been starring at me?" she questioned.
"Not that long," I lied.
I hadn't realized while I made these conclusions that she had woken up.
"Mhmm... So has that guy come back yet or what?" she said with annoyance.
"If he had we wouldn't be sitting here," my voice was raspy from dehydration.
"Of course." She lifted her eyebrows and looked to the right.
"Hal, do you honestly think we should just sit here and wait? We could be out there getting our families. I doubt the infection spread to everyone. It couldn't have, especially not them." Her face expression changed from hopeful to doubt.
"Em please. You know they're tough. Ryan won't let anything happen to them. No matter what, and mine are safe too. We had everything planned out. Everything's going to be fine."
Damn it. Why did I let that slip? Oh lord. What is wrong with me?
"Everything's going to be fine? Really Haley? Really? And how the hell would you know?!"
My eyes shifted from her gaze to the floor.
"Exactly. You don't know. We didn't have it planned out like you did. We talked a little about where we would go, or meet if we got separated. But everything seems so much more complicated when it's not in context. I'm just... damn, I'm sorry. I don't know what to think, how to react, or what to do. I'm so lost without knowing where they are and if they're safe or not. I'm so scared Haley. Truth is... I'm terrified."
I jumped off the counter and made my way to sit next to her. I then cupped her face in my hands and she tilted her head.
"Emily, we are in this together. I am just as terrified as you are. No matter what happens, we have each other. When you cry, I cry. Kay? There is no exception to being alone. I will never leave you sweetheart," I said with a smile on my face.
"Good. Cause you're all I got right now," she said while giggling.
I could feel the wetness of her cheeks as she pulled me in for a hug. We are in a very complicated situation because Emily is very rarely ever this emotional.
I grabbed her shoulders and pulled her off when someone on the other side of the door began to pound. No yelling this time, just beating on the door. It didn't feel right. Emily wiped the tears off from under her eyes and got up.
"Calm down." She said while approaching the door.
She stood still for a few seconds and slowly peered around the window to see further. I could see her reflection in the small window and her face expression indicated something was wrong.
"Emily get away from the door. NOW!" I screamed.
Too late, it had already smashed the glass and proceeded to make its way through the window. I jumped in between them, pushing Emily to the floor, shielding her with my body. His greedy hands had swiped and ripped part of my top layer shirt. I closed my eyes, Emily screamed and the gun roared. It sent the Infection flying down the opposite side of the hall way, and away from us. He reached around the window to unlock and open the door. I let out a long sigh when I realized it was him. His eyes caught mine and locked on with fire.
"Hey,time to go," he said while reaching a hand out to me. His voice was rough but gentle.
I took his hand along with Emily's. His blood was racing with adrenaline; I could feel his heart beating faster and faster through his palm. We exited the room, my head slowly took one last glance at the demented, it was twitching, and exhaling quick bursts of oxygen, and then suddenly went completely limp and breathless. We were thankful for being saved; we just couldn't find the words to say so. He guided us down a few hallways, some with lights, and some without. I noticed night had fallen, because the sunroofs were completely pitch black. Emily's hand tightened around mine when we came across a dark room that was unfamiliar. He hauled us in, forcing us to sit on the floor next to a chair where he sat. The door shut and locked. Three locks were indicated, the way they shined in the flashlight. Another man stood up and threw the light in our eyes.
