Chapter 6

It was silent for a few minutes, everyone deciding what they would do. Seconds felt like hours. I had to say something.

"John."

"Yes Haley?"

"I've decided I want to seek. But I'm also curious as to how you were able to get guns into the middle school?"

"Are you sure? And I had them in the back of my car in a compartment under the seats, I was supposed to go hunting but never found the time and I just forgot they were there over a period of time. I know that's probably the worst thing you can do but it looks like it worked out in our favor."

"Okay and I'm absolutely sure," I said trying to convince myself.

"Excellent," he said.

Emily raised her hand and spoke.

"I want to seek also."

Andrew looked at her and butted in.

"John I will shoot with you, but only if Emily stays."

Emily was completely oblivious to the reason Andrew would say such a thing. John stared deep into thought and finally decided. What the hell was that about?

"Emily, I need shooters more than I need watchers. Will you stay?"

Her eyes moved from John back to Andrew and the look on her face was disgust.

"Why should I? Haley's going."

"I see your point. Hmm," John said.

Nancy took the opportunity.

"I can watch in your place," she said with a gentle smile on her face.

"So Haley goes anyway? No. I'm not leaving her."

I was surprised to hear the next voice, following the words that came with it.

"That's okay Emily, Haley's staying here too," said Noah.

I knew he felt something different towards me, I just didn't think it was dislike.

"HA. What?! Since when do you think you can decide what I do Noah?"

"Since I'm co-leader and I decide who goes. Plus I saved your ass and I'm your guardian. Deal." A smirk crept into his lips.

I was about to argue with him when a small voice from the back started.

"Um... Haley, if you watch Angie, I can seek for you with Nancy, if that's ok."

Grete slowly approached into the circle, holding Angela's hand and bringing her to sit on my lap. I looked up at Grete and I knew she was going to speak. Angela sat on my lap and leaned her body into mine, gripping my fingers. I could smell her hair, and she smelled wonderful. I had never smelled such a scent before. The letters in my mind wrote innocence, small and scared, but warm and enjoying. I wrapped my arms around her and stared up at her mom.

"I used to be in marathons and ran freely. So this will be a piece of cake for me."

My eyes reflected back at John to see his reaction.

"Well, Grete you make a great point. I'm sorry Haley and Emily, but I agree with them. So you will stay here and protect Angela, and yourselves."

I held Angie closer and looked up at Emily. We both nodded in agreement to stay. John explained the plan to the group and everyone started getting ready. For some reason I had a sickening feeling in my stomach. Angie was gripping my hands very tightly and I knelt my head down into the crook of her neck. I didn't know her well but I could feel she trusted me.

"Haley, I want to stay with you." She said so softly I almost didn't hear her.

I said yes and Angie had run to her mom. It was when I looked up I noticed Noah was standing right above me. I stared into his eyes and the twisting in my stomach only increased.

"Hey," he said.

I looked away, not wanting my eyes to give away my feelings. Whatever feelings they were, they were not for him to see.

He sat down next to me and played with a small piece of my hair that curled ever so slightly at the tip. I wanted him to go further, to run his fingers through my hair and touch my scalp but he just let the hair drop. The anxiousness of my stomach began to burn and I knew it was because of him.

"Hi" I said back.

"I've been meaning to talk to you," he said.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry about how I acted when we first... met and how I acted right now. But I get these gut feelings and you just need to stay here. Safe."

His chocolate eyes scanned from my crossed legs up to my eyes.

"I know this is soon but I have something... will you keep it safe while I'm gone? Not saying I won't come back or anything, I would just feel better if it stayed with you."

"Depends..." I said nonchalantly.

I tried not to give him any emotion. My feelings for him grew so quickly. What was it about him that made me feel this way? I feel so weak and vulnerable around him.

"On what?" his face turned confused. He moved so his face was directly in mine.

"Well... on what it is."

"Oh." He said.

"Well... what is it?"

"This necklace, it was my Mom's. It's been in my pocket for a while, but I want you to keep it safe."

I was about to ask him what happened to his mother and what this meant, but my mind only told me to shut up.

"So... will you?" he pleaded.

"I... uh... well... are you sure?" the confused look on my face only made me look like an idiot.

"Absolutely," he said with certainty.

He took the necklace out of his pocket and let the chime hang from the chain in front of me. It was gold, a fine chain with a small thick heart dangling from the end. He held it out and slowly let it ravel into my hand.

"Thank you." I said, as if I had asked him for it.

"It means a lot to me, so protect it," he said.

"With my life," I promised.

"Thanks," he said with a sexy smile.
