Chapter 5

The floor was uncomfortable under my cross-legged position. It was hard to hear my own thoughts, let alone understand what was happening. Oh there she was, Emily's kind face would know what to say.

"Hey Em," I whispered. "Thanks for the blanket last night."

Her face expression changed and she shook her head.

"I didn't give you a blanket or any of that stuff. Noah did. After you fell asleep on the floor I saw Noah grabbing pillows, blankets and sleeping bags for everyone. I tried waking you up but he told me not to. He tucked you in, and said it'd be better if you just kept sleeping."

He tucked me in? Oh Lord. Just the thought made my body shiver with delight. I had no idea what was going on with him or me, but I knew with him, I'd always be safe. I pondered the possibilities while John continued to pace in front of us, back and forth, stopping... talking to himself and then moving again. He then stopped and stared at Noah- who was standing but decided to sit down... right next to me, so close I could hear him breathing.

"How are we going to take care of this?" John shook his head and started pacing again.

Noah sighed and John turned back to him.

"Noah would you mind getting the box and putting them in line in front of me? I need to see them all laid out."

Noah nodded and then turned to look at me. His eyes began to melt and I started to get lost. So badly I wanted to reach out and touch his lips just to see the glitter jump off his skin onto mine. I was so mesmerized I hadn't even realized he moved. When he sat back down I was winded with the scent that escaped his body. Amazing, absolutely amazing. The scent now was dripping honey with the slight gesture of sexy and dirty heat. His body was hot and I could feel it. My finger stretched out and ran down his wrist to his fingertip.

His eyes changed, mysterious to seductive. He clenched his hand and looked forward while running the hand I had touched through his sexy long brown hair. I wasn't paying enough attention to John to notice he had asked a question. I replayed it in my head.

"How many people have shot guns before?"

My eyes wandered the room, looking on each person's shocked face. They slowly began raising their hands. Just a few, as I counted. All the males lifted their hands. Nancy looked at her son Andrew and pulled his arm down. She shook her head at him and turned to John.

"John, what are you thinking about?"

I hadn't really been too attached to the conversations earlier so I didn't understand. I nudged Emily to explain.

"Okay, so I guess someone wasn't watching their shift correctly and we think at least 3 are in the building now. They're saying one has a gun and knows how to use it. Which is absolutely crazy. I mean, seriously? Do you think they could figure out how to use one, let alone be good at it? ... Anyway, John is thinking about ambushing them when they least expect it. They're half crazed so I don't think they know what's going on. We need people who know how to aim and shoot. We're going tonight so we need enough bodies to be look outs, and shooters."

I ran and reran what she was saying until it hit me. We? We're? She's going with them? I know she has a background of shooting and hunting with her dad but I don't think she'll be prepared for this. I mean... this is different.

"Nancy, what I'm thinking is that we'll need to decide who are the seekers and who are the shooters. I think whoever knows how to shoot a gun should be able to help us. And the ones that can't can watch out for us. So that gives me this. George, Noah, Andrew and I will be shooters. Emily, Haley will be watchers."

"No John. Andrew will not go, and I don't think George would be too much help. Emily and Haley are new and probably scared out of their minds. Why don't we just let them come to us?"

"Because Nancy, if we let them come to us, they will call to the rest and know where we stand. Haley and Emily have had experience with running from them so I think they can handle this, but if they decide not to, that's fine too. Andrew you will not go, on account that it is your mom's decision. Emily and Haley, I leave it up to you."

Andrew refused, "John it is my decision. I am seventeen and able to handle myself."

Before his mother could disagree, he stared at her and convinced her with his eyes.
