Chapter 7
He tied the chain around my neck, looked up at me and smiled. He then brushed his finger tips across my collar bone and stopped at the charm.
“It looks beautiful on you.” I blushed and glanced to the floor.
He took my chin up and made me look into his eyes.
“Stay… please,” I looked up at him with desperation but what in the world was I thinking? I barely knew this kid.
“Haley, you know I can’t,” he said with sadness in his eyes.
“I know. Just be safe okay?” his lips touched my temple with one small peck and before I could take it all in, he left.
Hours passed and I felt terrified. The waiting is what was killing me. I was so worried that I actually debated whether to leave and find him or not. He’s with John remember? John will never let anything happen to him. Don’t worry. He’ll be fine.
“But what if he’s not?” I said aloud, and realized that Emily heard me.
“Uh... what was that?” said Emily with confused eyes.
“What?” I said as if I hadn’t blurted something out.
“What what?” she questioned.
“Nothing,” I tried to sound bored.
“No Haley, not your mumbles… that sound,” her voice sounded curious but also worried.
I stopped to listen, but I could not hear anything besides my annoying heart beat that’s crying Noah, Noah… Noah, Noah.
“Em, I don’t hear anything,” I said just a little annoyed.
“Shut up and listen!” she said. I could hear the fear in her voice.
I went to the door and put my ear up against it. I heard it, but I wish I hadn’t. It was screams. Someone was screaming. I backed away from the door and grabbed Emily and Angie because the screams were getting closer. I crouched down behind a desk and held Angie close. My hands over her ears only pressed harder against her head. I turned her to face me. I took my hands away and looked Angie straight in the eye.
“Ang, I’m going to put you in the lower cupboard, I want you to shut your eyes and cover your ears. Don’t open them for anything. Wait until I come to get you. Ok?” I whispered.
I opened the small door, pushed the cleaning supplies aside and put her inside of it.
“Emily, stay here. Listen and watch what happens, don’t let anything happen to her ok?”
Emily nodded her head and took her hands off her ears.
I searched the room quickly for something I could use as a weapon. Luckily behind Noah’s pillow inside of a cubby, he left a pistol. It was black and heavy. It was foreign to me but it was my only choice. I remember him whispering to me before he left that I if I had to use it, that I should. I ran to the door and listened very carefully. The screams were getting closer and closer. I knew it was a human because the demented don’t scream for help.
I counted to three and opened the door, gun straight in the air ready to fire. Grete ran and ducked into the room, still screaming. And then I saw it, running toward me. He was wearing baggy pants and a white t-shirt, but you couldn’t tell because of all the blood on him. His leg was also broken; I could hear it snap every time he put pressure on it. It disgusted me, I was close to throwing up but the adrenaline kept me strong. It spread so quickly over me I had only one instinct, to pull the trigger and I did. A few times actually. It hit him straight on.
