Abigail opened the door and tried to be as quiet as possible when she stepped inside. The lights were off but it was still light in the house from the windows. She pulled off her shoes and walked up straight to bed. The soft blanket felt like silk to her skin after sleeping outside for the last couple of hours.
Her sleep didn't last for long. She was woken up by James an hour later. "It's 8 a clock," he said as she opened her eyes.
"That's too early" she wined. "Just 10 more minutes"
James rolled his eyes. "Sure," he said as he walked out. Right before he closed the door he turned to her. "They'll be here in 20 minutes"
Abigail shut her eyes right open. "Who?" James stepped inside of the room again, leaning against the wall.
"Aunt Rachel, Aunt Christina, Uncle Malcolm, Faith, Eli and Primrose" he listed.
"Aren't they coming tomorrow?" Abigail asked, hoping this would be a prank.
"Nope," he said and walked out.
30 minutes had passed and Abigail felt that she probably wouldn't have had to stress fully as much as she did. Right as she thought that however, the doorbell rang and the first guests arrived.
She walked to the door to open but James was faster. The first guests were Malcolm, their dad's brother, his wife Christina and their two kids Faith and Eli.
"Hello! Welcome!" James greeted and gave each of them a hug.
"Malcolm! Chrissie!" Abigail's dad said as he walked past her. "How are you?" He continued. Now it was his turn to give everyone a hug.
Faith and Eli were fraternal twins (even though many mistook Eli for a girl). They were one year younger than Abigail. James was 3 when they were born but he can't remember a life without them. They were not like the typical cousins who everyone tried to avoid, instead, they were great friends all of them. Including Isla.
The next person (and also the last) to arrive were aunt Rachel and her daughter Primrose (named after Primrose Everdeen). Rachel was a single mom raising her 3-year-old daughter all by herself.
"Hello," Rachel said as Abigail opened the door. "Am I late?"
"No no, not at all!" Abigail's dad assured. "You are actually rather early"
"Well, that's lovely, where is Jane?" Rachel asked looking for her sister.
The smiles on all of the Collins family (except for their cousins, aunt, and uncle) faded away.
"She, uhm, she is visiting Isla" Abigail's father Michael explained.
"Alright! Mike, do you need any help with the food?"
Abigail, James, Faith, Eli, and Prim all sat outside in their garden drinking juice. Prim was playing with a doll she had brought with her. The weather was unusually hot for being Canada.
"So, what's the tea?" Faith asked with a big smile. Oh, she loved drama, she was constantly crushing on someone or obsessing over celebrities. "Abby, have you gotten a boyfriend yet?"
James almost choked on his juice. Faith moved back an inch. "You good?" she asked with a smirk. He shook his head, still unable to speak.
"No, Fai, I do not" Abigail responded to the previous question. She was more single than ever. "What about you and Luke? Is that still going on?" She tried to quickly change the subject.
"Oh hell no, he is such a jerk, all he does is ask for nudes," she said and rolled her eyes.
"What is nures?" Prim asked innocently, she was such a small child.
"Nudes? Uhm..." Eli looked at Abigail for help. "It's something guy's want from girls"
"Like a hug?" Primrose asked again, tipping her head a little. "My friend Eric want to hug me"
"It's like a special hug, that you take a photo of and send to someone you like" Eli continued, trying his best to explain this as child-friendly as possible.
"But why has no one sent me nures?" She asked sadly. "Does no one like me?"
"You usually send them when you are older," Eli said, feeling pretty happy about his explanation.
"Do you send nures?" Prim asked Eli. His face turned red. Abby raised an eyebrow. Eli looked down, not facing the others.
"Maybe we should talk about something else?" James asked. They all nodded.
