“You’ve got to be kidding me…” I panicked, tugging at my pencil skirt, trying to loosen it from around my waist. It had suddenly got tighter than it had been when I first put it on in my bedroom this morning. “I can’t do this!” I was one of those people who started to actually hyperventilate when I panicked… One time in fourth grade we had to ride bikes around outside for gym class and I hadn’t really ridden a bike before. I got so scared I started to hyperventilate, making the gym teacher freak out and have me go to the nurse.
This time was no different.
“Avery, calm down. It’s going to be okay. Today all you’re doing is introducing yourself, nothing more.” Carly told me, rubbing my back soothingly. It worked a little bit as I gasped for air. I needed something in my lungs. This damn pencil skirt was way too tight!
“But the next day-” Before I could finish Carly pressed a finger to my lips to keep me from talking.
“You’re Avery Ross. You don’t give a shit what others think of you. You’re going to go into History 405, introduce yourself and show them who is boss. You aren’t going to let any of those students walk over you even though they are older than you. Probably by a year or so, maybe more…” She trailed off, getting lost in her own thoughts which made me groan.
“Great. I’m going to be a terrible teacher.” I wanted to just run back to the town hall and tell Alpha that I couldn’t do this. I mean they were older than me! They could probably teach me all of this stuff!
“No you’re not. Just picture everyone in their underwear.” Carly tried, smiling.
“That only works in TV shows.” Then I corrected myself, “Actually, they never even work in TV shows!” I lifted my hands and buried my face into them, probably messing up my make-up, but I didn’t give a shit at this point.
“Well, just try it. I tried it when I had to give that huge presentation in English.” Carly informed me which made me look up at her and roll my eyes.
“That was in sixth grade and all you had to do was explain your book.”
“Yeah, but it was difficult okay! Especially when I didn’t even read the book!”
I loved Carly, but she wasn’t the smartest tool in the shed and that’s probably why I loved her.
“You could pick that guy in his underwear.” Carly whispered, hitting my shoulder and pointing behind me. “Scratch that, picture him naked.” My eyes locked onto a guy with raven black hair and deep brown eyes. He was pretty hot, but as soon as he faced us my cheeks flushed red. He stopped talking to his friend for a second to wink at us.
He was definitely older than us.
“Nice job, Carly! Now you’ve got him thinking we’re checking him out.” I grumbled loudly, pushing my bangs out of my eyesight.
Carly did a flirty little hand wave before responding to me, “Oh well. Maybe he’ll pay attention in class. Actually, he’s heading into 405 now.” I don’t know why, but Carly just loved hitting my arm to get my attention!
I snatched her arm so she couldn’t go for another tap or hit on my arm. “I’d like to start my first week off without having fifteen bruises on each of my arms, thank you!” I yelled at her, taking a few steps back so she wouldn’t be able to hit me again.
