Chapter 2: Human Fates
Monserrat stood in front of the same house she saw in Andrew Jacobs memories the next morning. The sun barely rose past the ground, strawberry and rose petal skys grazed the sky to blue. She stared at the porch where Andrew Jacob held his twin boys one final time. In her hand was a piece of paper.
Samantha Hardings
The twin's mother's name seemed burned into her mind. In the very least they deserve to know their mothers name. With her cloaks hood up she disappeared as the sky became blue. Hanging off the mailbox was the note one side of the folded paper out.
Daniel and Roco Jacob's mother. Please let them know.
"Serra?"
Monserrat looked up from her daze. She was sitting underneath a massive oaktree at the back of the schools campus. Alonzo held his backpack staring down at her curiously. His brown eyes looked thoughtful.
"Something up? You've been off since the morning," He continued.
"I'm fine," Monserrat said.
"You sure don't look like it. Did you even sleep?"
She hadn't slept at all. Yet Monserrat couldn't let him know that. It had been 4 days since she had slept. 3 nights for a Reaper were nothing but after night 4 she began to feel the side effects of sleep deprivation. Andrew Jacobs murder had been haunting her. Since she had left the note at the Twin's friends door she had started going everyday after school to watch the kids get picked up at their elementary school. At night she stared at the cream ceiling of her room unable to close her eyes.
"I'm fine."
Alonzo slid down next to her, he nudged her tired form with his elbow. Monserrat pushed the side of his head as response.
"You should go Jair,"She continued.
"I don't think it's such a good idea to leave you alone-"
"Leave!" Alonzo flinched from the sound of Monserrat voice. With a frown he got up. He stared into Monserrat eyes, they appeared to him as they always did a vibrant hazel but the longer he stared they changed to a golden red. He blinked and strolled down the small hill to the front gates of the school.
Monserrat dug her nails into her palm. She silently watched as Alonzo disappeared past the iron gates. A chill ran down her spine, the feeling of someone beside her was clear.
"You have to stop pushing everyone in your life away Bella,"
"Don't start on me Jasper," Monserrat crossed her arms as she stared at her Grim Master. The young god had icy blue eyes and silvery long hair. He leaned on the trees trunk his eyes down cast looking right at her's. Monserrat stood up rolling her eyes at the man.
"Maybe if you let yourself build friendships I wouldn't nag you on it.
"I had to talk to you anyways," she flicked her wrist back as she walked down the hill. Jasper smiled and followed close behind
"You do? Im intrigued."
"Andrew Jacobs was murdered but he can't have been killed by a human. It was..."she shivered "unhuman. Bloodthirsty, I can't see someone doing what they did."
"What are you saying?" Jasper said suddenly alarmed.
"You have to go see it. It felt wrong... like he shouldn't have died at all. He left behind two little boys. Normally on hunts it's easy to push their emotions away but this time," Monserrat clenched her fist "It was like whoever did it wanted me to know this man's life."
Jasper placed a hand on Monserrat's shoulder. They had stopped and were now facing each other. Monserrat was shaking the uneasy feeling she felt then in the Jacobs home overwhelmed her once again. It was like she had suddenly fallen ill her stomach felt like it had gotten extremely heavy and was weighing down her entire body.
"Humans are free creatures but do horrible things, you must understand that," Jasper placed his hand on her cheek and turned her face up with his thumb "Not everyone is kind and giving. This is a world of sickness and addiction. Not even gods can save your kind. Fates are crafted from human decisions not the other way around."
Montserrat stepped back biting her lip to stop it from trembling. She thought back to Daniel and Roco. They were dealt a hand that they should never be dealt. A mother who ran and a father that loved them but was torn away from them. How could human decision create such horrible fates?
"Have you gone to vist laura?"
Monserrat groaned and Jasper laughed in return.
"Don't make me go see that alchemist. She just always gets on my nerves," Monserrat sourly said.
"Too bad there are barely any Alchemist around and she's the most skilled one in this area."
Monserrat crossed her arms. Jasper smiled and patted down his coat.
"Vamos Bella. We have to go I know your out of elixir. You've been using your essence a lot, you need to replenish it."
Monserrat threw her head back and lazily stared up at the sky "Why..."She dragged on the y. Jasper covered his mouth and giggled looking away from Monserrat.
"She's not far. Don't be a little girl."
"Don't call me a little girl Jasper," Monserrat put her knuckles onto her sides and glared.
"If you say so," Jasper chuckled to himself. Monserrat gave out an exasperated sigh.
"See even the thought of that woman aggravates me!"
"Too bad you need her," Jasper grabbed hold of the back of Monserrat's shirt and pulled. She threw up her arms and yanked Jaspers hand off her collar which he let go. He was already walking down a path Monserrat unfortunately found too familiar. Reluctantly she followed.
