Chapter 5: Reveals

Jasper still hadn't returned so once Monserrat felt she fully trusted herself with another living being she snuck out from her house using the front door. The sun had begun to break through the horizon. She climbed up the nearest house and situated herself onto the roof. Her golden eyes blazed as she studied the area to attempt to sense a poltergeist. To her dismay there was nothing.

She spent the next hour like that searching only to find nothing. It was totally clear just some regular souls, nothing too threatening. She did make some stops to lessen the culmination of spirits where it was particularly high. Her shoulder was beginning to throb from the weight of her scythe. There was also the fact that it was already morning and she still hadn't found Melilla Jackson's ghost that was bothering her.

The itch that someone was there was very apparent suddenly and she looked down to where Jasper was standing below her. It was so odd to see him standing in the middle of an empty basketball court. She grabbed a lamp post and slid down from the elementary school's roof she was on.

"Did you find her?" She asked. Jasper looked like exhaustion was beginning to take him as well.

"No," he said "Desaparecio"

She disappeared

"Damnit,"She said with all her might she dug the tip of her scythe into the black concrete.

"Bella there was nothing else we could do," He said. Jasper placed a hesitant hand on Montserrat's arm.

"We would have found her if you didn't make me go treat my injuries!"

"They would trace you to the incident and you would have to leave the state! What use are you then?!"

Monserrat was left stunned into silence.

"I'm sorry," She whispered. Jasper's scowl was still there as he let go and began to walk away. The morning scent of mist was thick in the air. Monserrat followed Jasper without complaint. How could she? he had a point. He had done her a favor and she knew it but still he was trying to make it seem like it was for his own selfish reasons then hers.

The ride on the 17 bus was silent. Morning commuters were all admadently talking on the phone or eachother. Some had their hoods up and earphones plugged in. The mint air freshener wafted through the bus. Jasper was sitting back his hands in the pockets of his coat. Monserrat sat beside him trying to bring up any sort of conversation but Jasper was completely ignoring her. She really wasn't use to him ignoring her, it was always Jasper who was chatting mentioning one thing or the other. His silence was a whole new experience.

They got off in their stop and walked the rest of the way to Monserrat's home. Monserrat stopped at the front door and turned around. Jasper still had a scowl his usual smile gone. He was looking off down the street.

"Go to school," He said with a dead tone and snapped his finger, disappearing in a swirl of white before Monserrat could even protest. With a sigh she entered her house, sneaking up the stairs and into her room.

She was out again an hour later. She had given her mother a kiss and her brother hadn't even bothered to show up at home, again. With a spam of messages to his phone Guillermo answered with a thumbs up. She was starting to get sick of his reckless behavior. As she walked to school late once again she didn't have the energy in her to give an effort to go faster.

She arrived half awake and an hour late. Ms.Goldstein had handed her another detention. She sat down next to Alonzo who was doodling in his notebook. With no sleep she could hardly retain any of the formulas in her brain. She tried drawing in her notebook but she hated every single sketch because they were really bad. Then she tried carving into the desk with scissors but Ms.Goldstein had stopped her before she even started by confiscating them. Monserrat was playing with her eraser when she felt a nudge on her shoulder and a crumpled piece of paper was thrown in front of her.
