Chapter 1: Tainted Streets
"The city of Granslet has been hit with a killer. Yesterday morning neighbors discovered a bloody handprint on the Jacobs door and entered to witness what looked like a massacre. The police refuse to comment on any specifics at this time."
"That sounds horrible," Adriana de Leon told her daughter in spanish "You have to be careful out there Monserrat."
Monserrat De Leon was sitting on a stool that faced the T.V. Whenever it flashed back to the home she squinted her eyes to try to get a better look.
"Monserrat did you hear me?" Her mother told her again.
"Huh what mande Ma," Monserrat replied mixing her english and spanish effortlessly.
"You need to be more careful you shouldn't be going out anywhere right now," Adriana said as she placed toast with egg down. Monserrat was still concentrating hard on the screen but sighed and gave up once the news report on the murder changed.
"I always am Ma," Monserrat replied .Montserrat pushed fiery red hair out of her face, her golden eyes moved to look at the mirror in the kitchen where her mother was placing thick layers of foundation on her bronze skin. If montserrat glazed her eyes over enough she could see her old dark ash brown hair replace her red hair and her eyes change from gold to hazel, just like her mothers-at least had been. Adriana put away her make up supplies and grabbed her purse. She was in her work uniform a black shirt and pants with black shoes, she was a waiter at an expensive restaurant in town "Amour".
"Have a good day at school. Check your brothers home before you go please ,"Adriana gave her a daughter a kiss on the cheek as she grabbed her keys and went out the front door. Monserrat sighed eating before sluggish going up the stairs with a glass of water and aspirin. She kicked open her brothers door and put the glass and aspirin on his drawer.
"Guillermo wake the hell up," Monserrat poked her brothers side. Guillermo bolted awake his eye whites tinted red, his brown eyes shifted from side to side in a sort of craze. An empty bottle of vodka rolled farther down his bed as he moved.
"Huh what? Where's my shit," Guillermo frantically searched his bed until he found a plastic bag with a dry green mush.
"Your lucky mom didn't come in. At Least try to hide that your getting wasted and high when i'm not here," Monserrat pointed to the drawer and left. She didn't hide her disgust when she saw her brother's hand pull out a beer underneath his bed. His hair was all of over the place almond locks falling over his eyes. As she walked to her room she was feeling sick of her brothers behavior. Barely able to keep a job and since he got broken up with and wasting his life away in alcohol and drugs. Monserrat grabbed her backpack and ran down the stairs to the front door feeling the fall air hit her cold skin.

"Serra?" Monserat De Leon was focused on a book in her lap she had to read for class. She turned around to see a boy , his hair a dark chocolate and eyes a milky brown. He looked down at her from where she sat at the base of a tree.
"Jair?" Monserrat answered looking up from her book. The boy smiled and sat next to her on the tree, adjusting his jacket as he did.
"Why do you always call me by my middle name?"
"Alonzo is a long name don't you think so? Jair just kinda rolls off the tongue. Plus I like it more,"Alonzo Rosales rolled his eyes at his friend .
Monserrat found her eyes wandering down Alonzo's frame. Impeccably dressed as always, skinny jeans, today a grey hoodie with a black jacket. He was looking down towards the field at the moment , she was so tempted to touch his cheeks like she use to, hold him like she use to. He didn't feel that way anymore though, they were just friends.
