Coleen’s Perspective
I'm in my office at the local British police department. I look through a quadruple homicide case that opened three weeks ago. The case that got Sapphire, my best friend, and I onto the force. Though we're only seventeen, we were both enlisted because of our quick thinking and intuition. Originally Sapphire was a suspect as well as myself (Our parents were murdered.), but we’re each other's alibis, along with five other people, for movie night. We even still had the ticket stubs when they questioned us. A newspaper slides onto my desk, I can see the date and title. September 14th, 1927.
"'Two Schoolgirls for Coppers and Quadruple Murder: Coincidence or Conspiracy!' Neither! You daft ninnies." I leave the station and head to my first class. I get there early so I just wait until the teacher comes in and calls my name. Sapphire was sick this morning and stayed home, where we live together now.
"Coleen? Coleen..."
"...Coleen!"
"Guilty!"
"Ms. Paragast, fall asleep in my class again and you'll be sent to the office." ‘Great, I missed another history lesson.’
"Yes ma'am, sorry Mrs. Picty." She goes back to teaching and I check the time. ‘Yes! Ten seconds till lunch.’ The bell rings and I head to the lunch room. I get my lunch and sit by Sapphire.
"Guess what you missed in class today."
"Oh oh, Thomas threw a spitball at Janie. No, wait! Eva broke up with Alex. No-"
"Whoa there! I didn't mean to literally guess. Hah!"
"Yeah yeah, I know. I just wanted to. So what did I miss?" Before I can answer one of the cheerleaders appears.
"She fell asleep in Mrs. Picty's class again." I glare at the girl and she leaves.
"History equals detective dream. What year was it this time?" I moan that she knows me too well.
"1927, Liverpool." Sapphire snickers and I look at the cafeteria doors.
"Hey look at the kid by the doors, in a Legend of Zelda get up. Isn't he one of the new kids?" She takes a look at him.
"Yeah he is. Guess he doesn't have many friends yet." I take a second look at him.
"No, I guess not." I look back at Sapphire. She has a pleading look on her face.
"You want to invite his family over here don't you?" It was more of a statement than a question but she nods anyway. I sigh.
"Fine, call Link-boy over."
Sapphire’s Perspective
"Yo, new kid, over here!" I'm not that far from him, all I have to do is speak louder than a whisper.
"You and your family can sit by us today." We offer.
"Are you sure it's ok? I mean, there's nine of us and I'm pretty sure you would want your friends to-" ‘He's avoiding the situation.’
"Stop, and listen." Coleen says.
"Thank you Coleen. Now firstly, when a woman offers you a seat, crowded or not, you take it with dignity and chivalry. You don't deny her kindness unless you have a previously acquired seat, which you obviously don't." I start out.
"Secondly, we only get half an hour to get to the cafeteria, get our food, and eat our lunches. Please don't waste that precious time arguing whether or not to take an offered seat." Coleen continues.
"So sit down, call your family over and eat your lunch." We finish together. ‘Well, at least he knows when to take instructions.’
‘Now that I get a better look at them all, their not exactly normal looking. In fact, some of them look like downright killers. I was suspicious before, but this just takes the cake. Oh no, one of them asked Coleen a question. Why does she never pay attention?’ I look at her face. ‘Definitely the parental murder dream.’
"Coleen. Wake up!"
"I'm innocent!"
"They saw you this time? That's odd."
"Yeah it was weird. Not our parents this time either."
"That's different. You only see it if you're there to witness it, so if not ours, then who's?" We both notice the new kids.
"We'll finish this later." We both say in a flat tone. Coleen tries to return to a bit of normalcy.
"Sorry, I zoned out, could you repeat that Clocky?" The girl with a clock eye finds her words.
"Right! I was asking if you like clocks." Coleen seems to think over it for a bit.
"Hmm, although they annoy me to no end with their ringing, I know that they are a necessity in life. So I suppose I’m neutral. How about you Sapphire?"
"Oh, I guess I'm also neutral. Though I hate their constant countdown of time, I do know when something is needed." Someone starts speaking in my ear.
"You are so-" They don't finish their sentence.
Coleen immediately gets behind them holding their arms with her boot between their shoulder blades. Of course, everyone looks freaked out, as usual. The newbies are, analyzing her? And, of course, the quarterback is under her shoe. ‘Guess it's time to release him.’
"Quarterback. Harmless. Let him free Coleen." I chuckle a bit when she drops him.
Coleen’s Perspective
"I'm her boyfriend! Why would you do that?!" He screeches at me. I just keep eating my lunch and let everything play out.
"She did it because she knows that I hate people who sneak up on me. Which I would consider as mercy compared to me, considering what happened at that Halloween party three years ago. Didn't that guy end up in a hospital for a week?" ‘Oh they shouldn't look so surprised. Sapphire could take down a bear if she had to.’
"You want me to sit with you?" ‘Is he being serious? He does know the relationship is fake. Right?’
"No Xyler, I'm fine. Go sit with the rest of the football team, ok?" She pecks him on the cheek and he leaves. ‘Finally!’
"What was that all about?" ‘The kid we called over kind of has blood for tears, cool!’
"That, my friends, was Blue's 'boyfriend'. You see, in this school, the toughest jock has to date either the head cheerleader, the cutest geek, or the toughest hot girl." I start.
"And somehow, I ended up as all four along with C here, who's the second toughest. But, rules are rules, I can't date myself and I'm not allowed to date a girl according to the school board, even if it's just for show. So I have a designated boyfriend, Xyler, a smart, funny, handsome and all around nice quarterback that just so happens to be the toughest guy in school." Sapphire continues and we finish together.
"To be honest, he's the perfect guy."
Sapphire’s Perspective
‘I bet I sounded so bored giving that explanation. Great, if I'm reading facial expressions correctly, then they have deemed me insane. Which I am, but they don't know that.’
"So, you don't like him then?" ‘Whoa, no eyelids, and is that-‘
"Is that smile real?" ‘Oh no she's gonna touch his face.’
"Coleen, no."
"But-"
"But no. You can't touch Chelsea's face."
"Give me one reason why I can't." I smirk as she says this.
"One, it's his face, ask permission. Two, you can't just randomly go around touching people's faces, it's rude. And three, it's his business whether or not his smile is real, not yours. Besides, I'm sure he could tell you if it was real or fake without you touching him. Need I continue.” She blinks in understanding.
"Ok fine. You win I won't touch random people’s faces without asking anymore."
"Good, now tell Chelsea you're sorry."
"What?! Why?"
"Because you need to apologize." She groans.
"Fine! I'm sorry I didn't ask if I could touch your awesome face. You happy now Blue?" I nod and answer his question.
"That's right. I don't like him."
"So can I have him?" ‘This girl's got black eyes, like completely black, wow!’
"Did you not hear that whole explanation, Jane?" ‘Who's name is Jane, apparently. Wait, was that a clown. Dude, where'd he come from. I'm gonna call his monochrome butt Newspaper.’
"Tell you what, when you get a 95 average in all of your classes, become head cheerleader and beat me in a fair fight, you can have him."
"Forgive my intrusion but, why don't you like him?" ‘This guy is wearing all black with a blue mask. He does have black tears though, cool! I'ma call him Bruiser.’
"Simple, he's too perfect for his own good." Coleen answers.
"No matter what, I'll find out what he's hiding." I continue and we finish together.
"No one's that perfect.” And lunch is over. ‘Yay, biology!’
