Shuichi's POV

We were just 8 years old back then. Carefree and happy. We were young kids, living in a world of safety, not knowing the true dangers of the world. We heard the basic things. Don't trust strangers, don't eat too many sweets or don't use vulgar language. But there was one rule that was specific to our town.

And we were to learn that rule soon.

We were at daycare, each kid was doing what they wished. Himiko was napping, Kaito and Maki were playing pirates with Rantaro and Kiibo, Kaede was playing dolls with Miu. I was playing with my best friend, Ouma. We were building a palace out of blocks. We had already gotten a cape and a scepter for Ouma from the costumes in the wooden chest. The scepter might've had a purple pony head on top of it, but Ouma already stood in Japanese for king horse so I guess it was fitting. Only Kaito knew what that pony's name was because apparently, it was from a sitcom, but nobody cared.

I also made a paper crown for Ouma. He was so happy. It always made my heart melt when I heard his cute signature giggle. 'Sweet...' I always thought.

Today was like any other day. A day full of friendship. "Kids! It's time for a story!" Miss Yukizome, our caretaker yelled. She was a young woman, always happy to take care of younger and older kids. She had a white bow in her hair and a blue dress with an apron. She was a nice and friendly teacher, but she could be strict if somebody had an attitude problem. All kids gathered around as Miss Yukizome, as she sat in the big blue armchair in the corner of the room. We all had a routine in which a different kid would pick a book every day to read. "Okay, today the book is picked by...Himiko!" Miss Yukizome announced. Himiko, a girl convinced that she had real supernatural abilities stood up and went up to the bookshelf. She looked around for a while before picking out a book and handing it to Miss Yukizome.

"The Creepy and Magic Tales of The Town! What a fun choice! Y'know one of the stories in this book is actually true! Believe me!" Miss Yukizome turned the pages "The Tale of Junko Enoshima" she said in a spooky voice. "Wasn't Junko a witch that lives in the forest behind town?" Korekiyo asked to which Miss Yukizome gave a friendly smile "Yes, that is correct. She is the town's most favorite legend and children's beloved creepy story! And today I will tell you all about her."

"Once in town, there were these two beautiful sisters. The older sister was Mukuro, who was athletic and skillful, and the adorable genius little sister, Junko Enoshima."

Miss Yukizome showed the illustration of the two sisters. Junko was a girl in a unique school girl outfit and two pink pigtails with bear pins. She had blue eyes and had an innocent look on her face. Mukuro was a short black haired girl with blue eyes and freckles. She wasn't smiling.

But Junko wasn't a normal child. She had magical powers that could charm people to do her bidding or make them feel utter despair. She was a genius of manipulation and other kids at daycare began to side with her. They were her new followers. The Children of Despair. These children, although they didn't look that much different, their souls were corrupt and fully committed to the witch. Her first noticed victim of despair was Mukuro, who adored her. Eventually, the despair spread so much, the townspeople noticed her. How in the rain of despair full children, she walked happily as if she had an umbrella to all those dangers. They started to suspect Junko for the tragedy. Junko's parents were convinced that she has been possessed by something evil, so they took her to church but that didn't work either. Kids began rebelling, doing everything to just please Junko, even if it meant doing terrible things, breaking objects and disobeying their parents.
