Blade spent five years in utter bliss. Hunter taught him skills: backstabbing, strength, fishing, education and everything else. He spent his days by the lake in the destitute neighbourhood, skimming stones and using old paperclips from the landfill, and scraps of crusted bread stolen from the floor of duck-ponds. Blade got a small income from this, and Hunter became a fisherman. He carried nets, and he gave them to Blade to mend. Nix was a builder, strong and an acrobat. He got the family a sturdy roof. Dash was short, and speedy. He worked in a factory, crawling under vast machines. He was eleven, and as malnourished as he was, he gave his food to Ace. He was a very ill child. Nix could barely speak to anyone from his stress, and he cried in the dusty back-alley, whenever he got the day off. Nix and Blade became firm friends, and Dash and Ace always played together. Baby Flash was a strong boy, and he was called Gerard by almost everyone. Four years in, Hunter had a child at 14. He brought it to the group, and named it Mary. Blade kept the knife in his right pocket, always. The story resumes five years later, with Blade needing a job.
